Chapter 22

: And Jesus addressed them again in parables, and said

. The Realm of Heaven may be compared to a king, who gave a wedding banquet for his son

. And he sent his servants to call those who had been invited to the banquet: and they would not come
And again he sent some more servants, and said: Tell those invited, Behold, my banquet is all prepared, my oxen and my fatten stock are slain, everything is ready; come to the wedding

; But they did not show interest, and one went off to his farm, and another to his business

. and the rest seized his servants, and abused them, and killed them

. And when the king heard of it, he was furious; and he sent his troops, and destroyed those murderers, and burnt their town

, Then said he to his servants, The banquet is ready, but as those who were invited proved to be unfit

. Go therefore to the byroads; and invite everyone you find to the banquet
And so those servants went out on to the roads, and rounded up everyone they met, good and bad alike; and the banquet hall was filled with guests
. And the king came in to see the guests he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding garment
. And he said to him, My friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe ? But the man was silent
Then said the king to the attendants: Bind him hand and foot and throw him out into the dark, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth
. For many are called, but few are chosen
. Then the Pharisees went away to plot between them how they might trap him in what he said
And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, and said to him: Teacher, we know that you are honest, and teach the way of God sincerely, regardless of a man's rank, for you favor none over another
? Tell us, therefore, what is your opinion: is it lawful to pay a tribute to Caesar, or not
? But Jesus was aware their malice, and said: Why do you set this trap for me, you hypocrites
. Show me the money you pay the tax with. And they handed him a denarius
? And Jesus said to them: Whose head is this, and whose name
. They say, Caesar's. He said to them: Then give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God
. And when they heard his reply they were taken aback, and they went off and left him
, That same day some Sadducees - who deny there is a resurrection of the dead, came to question him
. and said to him: Teacher ; Moses said to us, that if a man dies childless, his brother is to marry his widow to raise children for his brother
. Now we had a case involving seven brothers. The first married, and died without children, leaving his wife to his brother
. In similar manner so with the second, and the third, and so on to the seventh
. And last of all, the woman herself died, too
? Now at the resurrection to which of those seven will she be wife ? For they all had married her
. Jesus answered, and said to them: You are wrong, for you do not know the scriptures, nor the power of God
. For at the resurrection men and women do not marry, nor are given in marriage, they are like the angels of God in Heaven
: But as to the resurrection of the dead, have you never read what God himself said to you
. I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob ? He is the God of the Living, not of the dead
. And the crowd who listened were awestruck by his teachings
; And when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they got together
: and one of them who was a lawyer, to disconcert him, questioned
? Teacher, which is the great commandment of the law
. Jesus said to him: You must love the Lord your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might, and with all your mind
. This is the great and first commandment
. And the second which resembles it, is, You must love your neighbor as yourself
. On these two commandments hang the whole law and the prophets
, And while the Pharisees were gathered, Jesus put a question to them
. and said: What do you say about the Messiah? Whose son is he ? They said to him; The Son of David
: He said to them: How is it, then, that David, moved by the Spirit, calls him Lord? where he said
. The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, and I will put your enemies under your feet
? If David can call him Lord, how then is he his son
. And no one was capable of giving him an answer. And from that day, no one dared to question him again

Chapter 23

, Then Jesus spoke with the crowd and with his disciples

. and said to them: The scribes and Pharisees occupy the chair of Moses

. Therefore you must do whatever they tell you to observe. But do not be led by what they do, since they do not practice what they preach

? They tie up heavy burdens, and lay them on men's shoulders; but will they lift a finger to move them

. And everything they do is done to attract attention: like wearing broader ritual amulets, and longer tassels

, And they are fond of the places of honor at banquets and the front seats in the congregations

. and the formal greetings in the market arenas, and having people address them as Master

. But you must not allow yourselves to be called Master; since you have only one master, and you are all brothers

. And you must call no one on earth your father; since you have only one Father, and he is in Heaven
. And you must not be called teachers; since you have only one Teacher, the Messiah
. And the greatest one among you must be your servant
. For anyone who exalts himself will be humbled: and anyone will humbles himself will be exalted
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for you devour the houses of widows, under the disguise of protracting your prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation
Woe to you. scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for you shut away the Realm of Heaven from men's faces; neither going in yourselves nor allowing others to go in who want to
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: you who travel over sea and land to make one pagan convert; and when he is won over, you make him twice as fit for hell as you are
Woe to you, blind guides: You who say, If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold that is in the temple, he is bound
? Fools and blind! For which is worth more, the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred
. And, if anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing: but if anyone swears by the offering upon it, he is bound
? You blind fools! For which is worth more, the offering, or the altar that makes the offering sacred
. Therefore, he who swears by the altar, swears by that, and by everything that is on it
. And he who swears by the temple, is swearing by that, and by the One who dwells in it
. And he who swears by Heaven, is swearing by throne of God, and by the One seated there
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for you pay your tithe of mint, and anise, and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law - judgment, and mercy, and good faith: these you should have practiced, without neglecting the others
. You blind guides, you who strain out gnats, and swallow down camels
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for you clean the outside of the cup and the dish, while leave the inside full of extortion and intemperance
. You blind Pharisees, first clean the inside of the cup and dish, so that the outside may be clean, too
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for you are like whitewashed tombs which look handsome from the outside, but inside are full of bones of the dead and every kind of corruption
. So you as well, look to people as good honest men on the outside; but inside, you are full of unfairness and hypocrisy
; Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for you build the tombs of the prophets and you decorate the tombs of Holy men
. and you say: If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not joined with them in shedding the blood of the prophets
. Thus you give evidence against yourselves, of that you are the children of those who killed the prophets
. And as for you, then, finish off the work of your fathers
? Serpents, you brood of vipers ! How can you escape being condemned to hell
For this reason, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes; some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will scourge in your congregations, and hunt them down from town to town
and so you will draw down on yourselves the blood of every Holy man that has been shed on the earth, from the blood of Abel the Holy to the blood of Zachariah, son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar
. Truly I say to you, that all of this will come back on this generation
Oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kills the prophets, and stone those who are sent to you: how often I longed to gather your children, as a hen gathers her young under her wings, and you refused
! Look, your house will be left desolate
. For I promise, you shall not see me anymore, until you say: Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord

Chapter 24

. And Jesus left the temple, and as he was going away his disciples came up to point out to him the construction of the temple

And he said to them: You see all these? Truly I say to you, Not a single stone here will be left here on top another stone, it will all be torn down

And as Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives, his disciples drew near and asked him privately: Tell us, when is this going to happen; and what will be the sign of your coming, and of the end of the world

. Jesus answered them: Take care that no one deceives you

. For many will come using my name saying, I am the Messiah: and they will deceive many

And you will hear of wars, and the rumors of wars. Do not be alarmed, for all this is something that must happen, but the end will not be yet

For nation will fight against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there will be famines, and plagues, and earthquakes here and there

. But all this is only the beginning of sorrows

And they will deliver to you tribulation, and will kill you: and you will be hated by all the nations on account of my name
. Then many will fall away: and they will hate one another, and will betray one another
. And many false prophets will rise up; and they will deceive many
. And on account of the increase of evil, the love of many will grow cold
. But he that will have patience to the end, will have Life
. And this Gospel of the Realm will be preached in all the world, for a testimony to all nations: and then will the end come
And when you see the abominable sign of desolation, of which Daniel the prophet spoke, set up in the holy place; then let the reader understand
, and let those who are in Judaea flee to the mountain
, and let him on the roof not come down to collect what is in his house
. and let him in the field not turn back to fetch his clothing
. But woe to those with child, and to them that are nursing, in those days
. And pray that your flight be not in winter, or on the Sabbath
For there will then be great distress such as, until now, since the world began, there never has been, and will not ever be again
. And if those days had not been cut short, nobody would have survived. But, for the sake of the chosen, those days will be shortened
. Then, if any one says to you, the Messiah is here, or He is there; do no believe it
For false messiahs will arise, and dishonest prophets; who will produce great signs, so as to mislead, if that were possible, even the chosen
. Behold, I have told you beforehand
. If therefore they say to you, Behold, he is in the desert; do not go out: or, Behold, he is in a hiding place; do not believe it
. As the sunshine comes out of the east, and is seen even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man
. And wherever the carcass is, there the vultures will gather
And immediately after the sorrow of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not shine it's light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of Heaven will be shakened
And then the sign of the Son of man will appear in Heaven: and then will all the peoples of the earth mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of Heaven, with power and great glory
And he will send his angels with a great trumpet to gather together his chosen from the four winds, from one end of Heaven to the other
And now you take as example the fig-tree. As soon as its twigs become tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near
. So you, too, when you see all these things, you will know that it is near, as at the door
. Truly I say to you, That this generation will not pass away, till all this takes place
. Heaven and earth will pass away; but my words will never pass away
. But as for that day and hour, nobody knows, not even the angels of Heaven, but the Father alone
. And it was in the days of Noah, so will it be when the the Son of Man comes
, For as they were before the flood, eating and drinking, taking wives and taking husbands, right up to the day that Noah went into the ark
. and they did not know until the flood came and took them all away; so willbe the coming of the Son of Man
. Then of two men in the fields, one is taken, and the other left
. Of two women who grind at the millstone; one is taken, and the other left
. So, stay awake, because you know not at what time your Lord is coming
But be sure of this, that if the master of the house had known at what time the thief would come, he would have stayed awake, and would not have allowed his house to be broken into
. Therefore, you, too must be ready; because at a time you do not expect, the Son of Man will come
? What sort of servant, then, is faithful and wise enough for the master to place him over his household, to give them their food at the right time
. Happy is that servant, if his master's arrival will find him doing so
. Truly I say to you, He will place him over everything he owns
; But if that servant, being wicked in his heart, My master will be delayed in coming back
; and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with drunkards
50
, the master of that servant will come back on a day he does not expect, and at a time he does not know
. and will separate from him his share to give among the hypocrites; there will be wailing and grinding of teeth

Chapter 25

. Then the Realm of Heaven may be likened to ten bridesmaids, who took their lamps and went out to welcome the groom and bride

. And five of them were sensible, and five were foolish

. And the foolish ones took their lamps, but took no oil with them

. But the sensible ones took flasks of oil as well as their lamps

. And as the bridegroom was late, they all grew drowsy and fell asleep

. And at midnight there was shouted: Behold, the bridegroom is here, go out to meet him

. Then all those bridesmaids woke up and trimmed their lamps

. And the foolish ones said to the sensible ones; Give us some of your oil; for our lamps have gone out

The sensible ones replied: There may not be enough for us and for you: you had better go to those that sell it, and buy some for yourselves
. And while they went off to buy, the bridegroom arrived, and those that were ready, went with him into the wedding hall, and the door was closed
. And later the other maidens arrived back, and said: Lord, Lord, open the door for us
. But he answered them, Truly I say to you, I do not know you
. So stay awake, therefore,  because you do not know either the day nor the hour
; For it is like a man on his way abroad who summoned his servants and entrusted his property to them
. to one he gave five talents; to another, two; and to another, one: each in proportion to his ability: and then he set off
. Then he that received five talents went and traded with them and gained five more
. And in the same way: the one of two talents made two more
. But he that received one went off and dug hole in the ground, and hid his master's money
. And after a long time, the lord of those servants came back, and went thru his accounts with them
And he who had received the five talents came forward bringing five others; and said, Master, you gave me five talents; here are five more that I made for you
His master said to him: Well done! good and faithful servant: you have shown you can be faithful with small things; I will trust you with greater: come and join in your master's happiness
. And next the one of the two talents came forward, and said: Master, you gave me two talents; here are two more that I made for you
His master said to him: Well done! good and faithful servant: you have shown you can be faithful with small things; I will trust you with greater: come and join in your master's happiness
And last the one that received the one talent came forward and said: Master, I had heard you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sowed, and gathering where you have not scattered
. and I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the earth. Behold, you have what is yours
His master answered, and said to him: Wicked and slothful servant ! You knew me, that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not scattered
. You should have put my money on deposit that I might have come back and recovered my property with interest
. Take the talent from him and give it to the one that now has ten talents
. For to everyone who has, will be given, and he will have more than enough; but from the man that has not, even what he has will be taken away
. And throw the good-for-nothing servant out into the dark: where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth
. And when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and with him all his holy angels, then he will take his seat on the throne of glory
. And before him will be gathered all nations; and he will separate men from one from another, as a shepherd separates sheep from the goats
. And he will place the sheep on his right hand, and the goats on his left
Then will the king say to those on his right hand: Come, you whom are blessed by my Father; inherit the Realm that was prepared for you since the foundation of the world
; For I was hungry, and you gave me food; I was thirsty, and you gave me drink; I was a stranger, and you made me welcome
. I was naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you visited me; in prison, and you came to see me
? Then will the righteous say to him: Master, when did we see you hungry, and fed you? or thirsty, and gave you drink
? And when saw we you as a stranger, and made you welcome? or naked, and clothed you
? And when saw we you sick, or in prison, and came to see you
And the king will answer, and say to them: Truly I say to you, That in so far as you did so to one of the least of my brothers, you did so to me
, Then will he say also to them on his left hand: Go away from me, you with your curse upon you, into eternal fire prepared for the Deceiver and his angels
; For I was hungry, and you gave me no food; and I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink
and I was a stranger, and you made me not welcome; and I was naked, and you did not clothed me; and I was sick and in prison, and you did not visit me
? Then it will be their turn to ask: Master, when saw we you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not come to your help
Then will he answer: Truly I say to you, That in so far as you neglected to do so to one of the the least one of these, you neglected to do so to me
. And they will go away to eternal torment, and the virtuous into Eternal Life

Chapter 26

: And at that time when Jesus had finished all these sermons, he said to his disciples

. You know that in two day's time it will be Passover; and that the Son of Man is to be handed over to be crucified

. Then assembled the high priests and the scribes and the elders of the people, in the palace of the high priest, who name was Caiaphas

. And they plotted against Jesus, that they might arrest him by some fraud, and kill him

. But they said: Not during the festival, for there might be a riot among the people

, And when Jesus was at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leperous

. there came to him a woman having a flask of expensive aromatic ointment, and she poured it on the head of Jesus as he was sitting

? And when his disciples saw it they were upset, and said: Why such extravagance

. For this ointment might have been sold for a good price, and that have been given to the poor
. But Jesus became aware of this, and said to them: Why do you criticize the woman ? She has done a good deed for me
. For the poor you have always with you; but you will not always have me with you
. And by this act of her pouring the ointment on my body, she has contributed toward my burial preparation
. Truly I say to you, That wherever my Gospel will be preached throughout the world, what she did will be spoken of as her memorial
, Then one of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went off to the high priests
. and said to them: What will you give me, if I hand him over to you ? And they promised him thirty pieces of silver
. And from that time he sought an opportunity to betray him
? And on the first day of unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus, and said to him: Where do you want for us to prepare for you to eat the Passover
. And he said to them: Go into the city, to a certain man, and say to him: Our Master said, My time is near: it is with you that I will keep the Passover with my disciples
. And his disciples did what Jesus told them, and prepared the Passover
. And when evening came, he at table with his twelve disciples
. And as they were eating, he said: Truly I say to you, That one of you is about to betray me
? And it saddened them much. And they each started to ask him; Is it I, my Lord
. And he answered and said: Someone who dips his hand with me in the dish, he will betray me
And the Son of Man goes to his fate, as is written of him: but woe to that man, by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would have been better for that man if he had not been born
. Judas the betrayer answered and said: Teacher, is it I ? Jesus said to him: You have said it
And as they were eating, Jesus took some bread, blessed it, and broke it; and gave it to his disciples, and said: Take this, eat; this is my body
. And he took a cup, and offered thanks and gave it to them, saying: Take this, drink of this, all of you
. This is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed on behalf of the many, for the forgiveness of sins
But I say to you, that from now on I shall not drink of this fruit of the vine, until the day when I drink it new with you in the Realm of God
. And after they sang psalms, they left for the Mount of Olives
. Then said Jesus to them: You will all lose faith in me this night; for it is written, I shall strike the shepherd, and the sheep of his flock will be scattered
. But after my resurrection, I shall go before you to Galilee
. At this, Kephas replied: Though all men should lose faith in you, I will never lose faith in you
. Jesus said to him: Truly I say to you, That this night, before the cock crows, you will disown me three times
. Kephas said to him: Even if I have to die with you, I would not disown you: and all the disciples said the same
. Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane: and he said to his disciples, Stay here, while I go to pray
. And he took Kephas and the two sons of Zebedee, and he started to be despondent and full of sorrow
. And he said to them: My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here; and keep awake with me
And going on a little, he fell to his face, and prayed, and said: My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass me by. Yet let it be as you, not I, would have it
? And he came back to his disciples, and found them sleeping: and he said to Kephas: So you cannot stay awake with me for one hour
. Wake up, and pray you not be put to the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak
. Again, a second time, he went away and prayed: My Father, if this cup cannot pass by without my drinking it, your will be done
. And he came back again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy
. And he left them, and went again and prayed the third time, repeating the same words
Then he came back to his disciples, and said to them: You can sleep on now, and take rest. Now the hour has come when the Son of Man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners
. Get up, let us go. Behold, he that betrays me is coming
And while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, appeared, and a large crowd with him, with swords and clubs, sent by the high priests and elders of the people
. And Judas the betrayer had arranged for them a sign, saying: The one whom I embrace will be he: Take hold of him
. And he went straight up to Jesus, and said: Greetings, Teacher; and embraced him
. And Jesus said to him: My friend, do what you have come for. Then they came forward, and laid hold of Jesus, and took him
. And one of those with Jesus grasped his sword, and struck at a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear
. Then Jesus said to him: Put the sword away; for all that live by the sword, will die by sword
? Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father who would promptly send more than twelve legions of angels to my defense
? But then how would the scriptures be fulfilled, that say this is the way it must be
At that time Jesus said to the crowd: Have you come as if against a brigand, with swords and clubs, to capture me ? I sat teaching in the temple day after day with you, and you never laid hands me
And all this now has happened to fulfill the writings of the prophets. Then all the disciples deserted him and ran away
. And they who arrested Jesus led him off to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and elders were convened
And Simon Kephas followed him from a distance as far as the high priest's courtyard, and going inside, sat down with the guards in there to see the outcome
; And the high priests and the elders and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so they might put him to death
, and they did not find any, despite many false witnesses that came, until eventually, two stepped forward
. and said: This man said, I can do away with the sanctuary of God, and in three days rebuild it
? And the high priest got up and said to him: Have you no answer to that ? What is this evidence leveled against you
And Jesus was silent. And the high priest answered, and said to him: I put you on oath by the living God, that you tell us whether you are the Messiah, the Son of God
Jesus said to him: It is you who say it. And I tell you, That here onward you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming upon the clouds of Heaven
At this the high priest tore open his robes, and said: Now, he has blasphemed! Why should we seek further witnesses ? Behold, you have now heard his blasphemy
. What is your verdict ? They answered and said: He deserves death
, Then they spit in his face, and hit him, and others struck him
? and said to him: Be the Prophet for us, Messiah, who struck you
And Kephas was sitting outside in the courtyard, when a servant girl came over to him, and said: You too were with Jesus the Nazarene
. But he denied it in front of all them, and said: I do not know what youare talking about
And as he went out to the gateway another servant saw him, and said to them: This man was also there with Jesus the Nazarene
. And again he denied it, swearing: I do not know that man
And a little while later, some bystanders came up and said to Kephas: You too are certainly one of them; even your accent gives you away
. Then he began cursing and to swear, I do not know that man. And at that moment a cock began to crow
And Kephas remembered what Jesus had foretold, who said to him: Before the cock crows, you will have three times disowned me. And he went out and wept bitterly

Chapter 27

. And when morning came, the high priests and the elders of the people met in council against Jesus to bring about his death

. And they had him bound, and led him away to hand him over to Pilate, the governor

Then Judas, his betrayer, seeing that Jesus had been condemned, was filled with remorse. And he took the thirty pieces of silver back to the high priests and elders

. and said: I have sinned, for I have betrayed innocent blood. And they said: What is that to us? That is your concern

. And flinging down the silver in the temple, he made off, and went and hanged himself

. And the high priests picked up the silver, and said: It is not sanctioned to put this into the treasury, because it is blood money

. And they discussed the matter, and with it purchased the potter's field, for a place to bury foreigners

. And this is why the field is called the Field of Blood today

This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet: I took the thirty silver pieces, the sum at which precious One was priced by the children of Israel
. and I gave them for the potter's field, just as the Lord directed me
And Jesus was brought before the governor, and the governor put to him this question: Are you the king of the Jews? And Jesus replied: You have said it
. And when the high priests and elders accused him, he made no reply
? Then Pilate said to him: Do you not hear how many charges they have brought against you
. But he did not answer him with even a word, and at this he [Pilate] was utterly amazed
. Now at every feast day, it was the governor's custom to release a prisoner to the people, anyone they chose
. And they held a notorious prisoner, called Bar Abas
? And when the crowd had gathered, Pilate said to them: Which do you want me to release for you, Bar Abas, or Jesus who is called Messiah
. For Pilate knew that it was out of jealousy that they had handed him over
Now as the governor was presiding on the bench, his wife sent  word to him, and said: Have nothing to do with that Holy man; for I have been greatly upset by a dream I had about of him
. Meanwhile, the high priests and the elders convinced the crowd that they should ask for Bar Abas, and have Jesus put to death
. So when the governor asked them: Which of the two do you want me to release for you ? They said: Bar Abas
! Pilate said to them: And what am I to do with Jesus who is called Messiah ? They all replied: Crucify him
! The governor said to them: But what has he done that is so evil ? And they shouted out even louder: Crucify him
And Pilate, when he saw that nothing helped, but instead that a riot was breaking out, he took water and washed his hands in sight of the crowd, and said: I am innocent of this honest man's blood: do as you see fit
! And all the people answered, and said Let his blood be on us, and on our children
. Then he released to them Bar Abas; and scourged Jesus with whips and handed him over to be crucified
. Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus to the Praetorium, and gathered a whole company of soldiers around him
. And they stripped him down, and wrapped him in a scarlet army cloak
And they wove a crown of thorns, and set it on his head, and put a reed in his hand, and dropped on knee before him, and mocked him, and said: All hail, king of the Jews
. And they spit in his face, and took hold of the reed, and struck him on his head
And when they had finished mocking him, they took the cloak off him, and dressed him in his own clothes, and led him out to be crucified
. And on their way out, they met a man of Cyrene whose name was Simon; and they ordered him to carry his cross
. And they came to a place called Gagulta, which means a skull
. And they gave him to drink wine, mixed with gall, which he tasted, but would not drink
. And when they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots
. And they sat down there, and kept watch over him
And they placed above his head the charge for his death, in writing: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
. And there were crucified along with him two robbers, one at his right, and the other on his left
And those that passed by slandered him, and shook their heads
and said: You, who would do away with the temple, and reconstruct it in three days, save yourself; if you are the Son of God, and come down from the cross
, So as well the high priests mocked him, along with the scribes and elders and Pharisees
and they were saying: He gave life to others, yet he is not able save his own life, if he is the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, so we may believe in him
. He put his trust in God; let him save him now, if he so wishes it with him: for he said, I am the Son of God
. In the same way, even the robbers that were crucified with him taunted him
. And from noon on there was darkness over all the land, until mid-afternoon
? And about mid-afternoon, Jesus cried with a loud voice and said: My God, My God; why have you left me
. And some of the men that stood there, when they heard it, said: This man calls for Elijah
And immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, and soaked it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and offered it to him to drink
. But the rest said: Let him be; let us see if Elijah comes to save him
. Then Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and gave up his spirit
And suddenly the curtain at the entrance of the temple was torn apart, from top to bottom; and the earth shook, and the boulders split
, and the tombs were opened; and many bodies of saints who were at rest, arose
. and went out, and after his resurrection, entered into the holy city, and were seen by many
And when the centurion, together with those guarding Jesus, had seen the earthquake and all that had taken place, they were very afraid, and said: Truly, this was the Son of God
. And many women were there looking on from a distance, those who had followed Jesus from Galilee, and had attended to him
. And one of them was Mary of Magdala, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children
. And when evening came, there arrived a wealthy man from Ramath, whose name was Joseph, who was also taught by Jesus
. This man went nearby to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. And Pilate ordered the body be handed over to him
; And Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a shroud of clean linen
and laid it in his own new tomb, that was hewn out from rock. And he placed a large boulder at the entrance of the tomb, and went away
. And now Mary of Magdala, and the other Mary were there, sitting across from the tomb
, And on the next day which was after the sunset, the high priests and Pharisees convened with Pilate
. and said to him: Ruler of us, we recall what this fraud said while he was alive, that, After three days, I will rise
Order it, therefore, that they guard the tomb; until the third day; lest his disciples come and steal him away by night, and say to the people that he has risen from the dead; and this final fraud be worse than the first
. Pilate said to them: You have a guard: go and secure it as well as you can
. And they went and took guard by the tomb, and sealed the stone

Chapter 28

And now as the Sabbath waned, in the dawn of the first of the week, came Mary of Magdala and the other Mary, to view the tomb

Behold, there was a great earthquake: for an angel of the Lord descended from Heaven, and came and rolled away the stone from the entrance, and sat upon it

: And his countenance was as lightning; and his robes white as snow

. and the guards were were shaken with fear, and became lifeless

. But the angel answered, and said to the women: Be not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified

. He is not here; for he is risen, as he predicted. Come, see the place where our Lord was laid

Now go quickly and tell his disciples, that he is risen from the dead; and Behold, he goes before you to Galilee; there will you see him. Behold, I have told you

. And they left quickly from the tomb, with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples

. And Jesus met them, and said to them: Peace to you. And they came close and clutched his feet, and fell down before him
. Then Jesus said to them: Do not be afraid; but go, tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and they will see me there
. Now when they had left, some of the guards came into the city, and told the high priests everything that had happened
, And they convened with the elders, and held a meeting; and they handed over a considerable bribe to the guards
. and they said to them: Say that his disciples came and stole him away in the night while we were sleeping
. And should the Governor come to hear of this, we will deal with him, and we will not get you in trouble
. And they, when they took the money, did as they had been told to do. And this is the word among the Jews to this day
. And now, the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had summoned them to
. And at the sight of him some that were doubting fell down before him
And Jesus drew near, and spoke with them, and said to them: All authority has been given to me, in Heaven and on earth. And as my Father sent me, so I send you
. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations; and baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit
. And teach them to hold to all the precepts I gave to you. And know that I am with you always, to the end of the world, Amen
