Chapter 15

: Then to Jesus came Pharisees and scribes of Jerusalem, and said

? Why do your disciples break away from the tradition of the elders, and do not wash their hands when they eat bread

? Jesus replied and said to them: Why do you also break away from the commandment of God, for the sake of your tradition

. For God has said: Do your duty to your father, and your mother; and Anyone who curses his father or his mother, will be put to death

But you say : If anyone says to his father or to his mother, Anything I have that I might have used to help you is dedicated to God: then he is rid of his duty to father or mother

. And so you make the word of God empty, by means of your tradition

: You hypocrites, it was you Isaiah meant when so well he prophesied

. This people honors me with only with the lips, yet their hearts are far from me

. The worship they offer me is worthless, while they teach doctrines that are only human regulations
. And he called the crowd to him and said, Listen and understand
. What goes into the mouth does not make a man unclean; it is what comes out of the mouth, that makes a man unclean
? Then his disciples came and said to him: Do you know that the Pharisees were shocked when they heard what you said
. And he replied to them: Any plant my Father who is in Heaven has not planted will be pulled out by the roots
Leave them alone: they are blind men leading the blind. And if a blind man leads another, they both will fall into a pit
. And Simon Kephas answered and said to him: Lord, explain to us this parable
? And he said to them: Do even you not yet understand
? Do you not know, that whatever goes in the mouth, passes to the stomach, and from there is passed by digestion
. But that which comes out of the mouth, comes from the heart: and that is what makes a man unclean
. For, from the heart comes evil intentions, adultery, murder, fornication, theft, perjury, slander
. These are the things that make a man unclean. But if a man eats while his hands are unwashed, he is not unclean
. And Jesus left from there, and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon
Then out came a Canaanite woman from that district, shouting out and saying: Take pity on me, my Lord, son of David: my daughter is tormented by a demon
. But he answered her not a word. And his disciples went and pleaded with him, and said: Send her away, for she shouts at us
. But he answered and said to them: I was sent only to the sheep that have strayed from the house of Israel
. And she came, and knelt before him, and said: Lord, help me
. Jesus said to her: It is not fair to take the bread of children and throw it to dogs
. And she said: Even so, my Lord; yet the dogs eat of the scraps that fall from the tables of their masters, and live
. Then Jesus said to her: Woman, your faith is great: let your wish be granted. And her daughter was cured at that moment
. And Jesus left from there, and came to the shores of the sea of Galilee: and he went up a hill, and sat there
And large crowds came to him; and with them were the lame, and the blind, and the dumb, and the crippled, and many others: and they put them at the feet of Jesus, and he healed them
So that the crowds were astonished, when they saw the dumb speaking, and the crippled made whole, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing: and they praised the God of Israel
Then Jesus called his disciples, and said to them: I pity this crowd; for these past three days they have been with me, and they have nothing to eat: and I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they collapse along the way
? His disciples say to him: Where can we get enough bread in the desert to satisfy such a crowd
. Jesus said to them, How many loaves have you ? They said to him, Seven, and a few small fish
. And he instructed the crowds to sit down on the ground
And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and giving thanks, and broke them, and handed them to his disciples; and the disciples handed them out to the crowds
. And they all ate as much as they wanted. And the scraps of leftovers they collected up filled seven baskets
. And four thousand men had eaten, along with women and children
. And when he had sent the crowds away, he got into a boat, and went to the shores of Magdala

Chapter 16

. And Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven

. But he answered, and said to them: In the evening you say, It will be good weather; for the skies are red

And in the morning you say, There will be a storm today; for the skies are overcast and red. You hypocrites, you are smart enough to read the appearance of the sky, but the signs of this time you lack skill to read

A evil and unfaithful generation asks for a sign; but no sign will be given it, only the sign of the prophet Jonah. And he leaving them, and went away

. And his disciples, having crossed to the far shore, had forgotten to take bread with them

. And he said to them: Take heed, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees

. And they said among themselves, Is it because we have not brought any bread

? Jesus knew it and said to them : You of little faith! why are you talking among yourselves about having taken no bread

? Have you not yet understood ? Do you not remember the five loaves and the five thousand, and the many baskets you took up
? Nor the seven loaves and the four thousand, and the many baskets you took up
How is it that you do not understand that it was not about bread that I spoke to you of; but that you should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees
. Then they understood that he did not tell them beware of the yeast of bread, but of the teachings of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees
? And when Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, he questioned his disciples, and said: Who do men say the Son of Man is
. And they said: Some say he is John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets
? But you, he said, who do you yourselves say that I am
. Simon Kephas answered and said: You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God
. Jesus answered, and said to him: Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonas; for flesh and blood did not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in Heaven
. From now on I say to you, that you are Kephas: and on this rock, I will build my church: and the gates of death will not win over it
To you will I give the keys of the Realm of Heaven: and whatever you will bind on earth, will be bound in Heaven: and whatever you will unbind on earth, will be unbound in Heaven
. Then he gave orders to his disciples, that they should tell no man that he was the Messiah
And from that time Jesus began to make it clear to his disciples, that he was to go up to Jerusalem, and to suffer much from the elders, and from the high priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised up
. And Kephas took him aside, and began to reprimand him; and he said: Be it far from you, my Lord, that this may happen
. But he turned, and said to Kephas: Get behind me, Satan: You are a obstacle to me; for the way you think is not God's way, but man's
. Then said Jesus to his disciples: If any one wants to follow me, let him renounce himself; and let him take up his cross, and follow me
. For anyone who wants to save his life, will lose it; but anyone who will lose his life for my sake will find it
? For what will it gain a man, if he wins the whole world and his soul gets lost? What has a man to offer in exchange for his soul
. For the Son of Man is to come in the glory of his Father, with his holy angels; and then will he reward each man according to his works
Truly I say to you: There are some of these standing here, who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his Realm

Chapter 17

. And six days later, Jesus took Kephas, and James, and John his brother, and took them alone up a high mountain

. And Jesus was transfigured in their presence: his face was as bright as  the sun; and his clothes became as white as light

. And there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, who were talking with him

Then Kephas spoke to Jesus: Lord, it is wonderful for us to be here: and, if you wish, let us make three booths here; one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah

And while he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud covered them with shadow: and from the cloud there came a voice which said: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am pleased; Listen to him

. And when the disciples heard it, they fell facedown, and were very afraid

. And Jesus came to them and touched them, and said: Get up, and do not be afraid

. And they lifted up their eyes, and they saw no one, except Jesus alone

And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus ordered them, and said to them: Do not speak of this vision to anyone, until the Son of man arises from the dead
? And his disciples asked him, and said to him: Why then do the scribes say, that Elijah must come first
. Jesus answered, and said to them: Elijah will come first so that all things might be fulfilled
I say to you. That, behold, Elijah has come, and they did not know him; and they did to him as they wished: and likewise, as well, the Son of man must suffer from them
. Then the disciples understood that he had been speaking to them about John the Baptist
, And when they came toward the crowd, a man approached him, and bowed down on his knees to him
and said to him: Lord, have mercy on me. I have a son who is a lunatic, and badly afflicted; for often he falls into the fire or into the water
. And I brought him to your disciples, and they were not able to heal him
Jesus answered and said: O faithless and perverse generation ! How much longer must I be with you ? and how much longer put up with you ? Bring him here to me
. And when Jesus rebuked the demon, and it left him: and at that moment the child was healed
? Then came the disciples to Jesus, privately, and said to him: Why were we unable to heal him
Jesus said to them: Because of your lack of faith. For truly I say to you, That if your faith were the size of a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it would move: and nothing would be impossible for you
. As for this kind, it does not goes out, except by fasting and prayer
; And while they were traveling in Galilee, Jesus said to them: The Son of man will be betrayed into the hands of men
. and they will kill him; and on the third day he will arise. And they were very saddened
? And when they reached Capernaum, the collectors of the *half-coin head tax came to Kephas, and said to him: Does not your teacher pay his *half-coin [*dual-each]
He said to them, Yes. And when Kephas had entered the house, Jesus anticipated him and said to him: What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth receive toll and tribute ? from their sons, or from foreigners
26
. Simon said to him: From foreigners. Jesus said to him: Then the sons are exempt
However, so as not to offend these people, go to the sea and cast in a fishhook, and the first fish that bites, open it's mouth, and you will find a coin: take it and give it to them for me and for you

Chapter 18

? At this time the disciples came to Jesus, and said: Who is the greatest in the Realm of Heaven

, And Jesus called a little child to him, and set the child in front of them

. and said: Truly I say to you, that unless you change, and become like little children, you will never enter the Realm of Heaven

. He then, that will make himself little as this child, is the greatest in the Realm of Heaven

. Anyone that will welcome a little child like this, in my name, welcomes me
And anyone who is an obstacle to bring down one of these little ones that has faith in me, it would be better for him that a millstone were hung to his neck, and drown in the depths of the sea

. Woe to the world that here should be such obstacles ! For obstacles will come. But, woe to the person who provides them

If then your hand or your foot makes you trip over, cut it off and throw it away: for it is better for you to enter into life lame or crippled, than to have two hands or two feet, and fall into eternal fire

And if your eye makes you trip over, pluck it out and throw it away: for it is better for you to enter into life with one eye, than to have two eyes, and fall into the hell of fire
. See that you do not mistreat even one of these little ones; for I say to you that their Angels in Heaven are continually in the presence of my Father in Heaven
. For the Son of Man, has come to give life to that which was lost
? How do you view it ? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them strays, will he not leave the ninety and nine in the hills, and go in search of the one that strayed
. And if he finds it, truly I say to you, that it gives him more joy than do the ninety and nine that did not stray
. Similarly, it is never the will of your Father in Heaven that one of these little ones should be lost
. Moreover, if your brother offends you, go have it out with him alone. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother
But if he does not listen to you, take with you one or two, that the evidence of two or three witnesses is required to sustain any charge.
. And if he refuses to listen to them, report it to the community. And if he refuses to listen to the community, treat him like a tax collector and a pagan
. Truly I say to you, That whatever you bind on earth, will be bound in Heaven: and whatever you let loose on earth, will be let loose in Heaven
. Again I say to you, That if two of you agree to ask on earth about anything at all, it will be granted to you by my Father in Heaven
. For where two or three meet in my name, I shall be there with them
? Then Kephas went up to him, and said: Lord, how often, if my brother wrongs me, shall I forgive him ? As often as seven times
. Jesus answered: Not seven times, I say to you, but seventy times seven
. And so the Realm of Heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle his accounts with his servants
. And when he began to reckon, they brought to him a man who owed ten thousand talents
And as he had no means to pay, so his master gave orders for him to be sold, along with his wife and his children, and all that he owned, to meet the debt
. At this, servant fell down at his feet, and said: Master, give me time, and I will pay you back the whole sum
. And his master felt sorry for servant, and let him go, and cancelled his debt
Now as that servant went out, he happened to meet one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. And he grabbed him and throttled him, and said to him: Pay me what you owe me
. And that fellow servant fell at his feet and pleaded him, and said: Give me time, and I will pay you back the whole sum
. But he would not agree, but had him thrown into prison, till he should pay the debt
. And when their fellow servants saw what had happened, it disturbed them alot; and they went and reported it to their master all that had transpired
: Then his master sent for him, and said: You wicked servant !  I cancelled all your debt, when you appealed to me
? Should you not as well have felt compassion for your fellow servant, as I had felt compassion for you
. And so, in his anger the master handed him over to the torturers, till he should pay all his debt
. So will my Father in Heaven deal with you, unless each of you forgives from your heart his brother of his wrongs

Chapter 19

. And when Jesus had finished these sermons, he left Galilee, and came into the part of Judaea on the far side of the Jordan

. And large crowds followed him, and he healed them there

? Some Pharisees approached him, and to test him they said: Is it unlawful for a man to divorce his wife for any pretext

? And he answered them: Have you not read that the creator from the beginning, made them male and female

. And that he said: This is why a man must leave father and mother, and cling to his wife; and the two become one body

. They are no longer two, therefore, but one body. So then, what God has joined, man must not divide

? They say to him: Why then did Moses command a decree of divorce should be given in cases of divorce

. He said to them: Moses allowed you, because you were so unteachable, to divorce your wives: but it was not so from the beginning

And I say to you, That whoever leaves his wife who is not adulteress, and marries another, commits adultery. And whoever takes her then that is divorced, commits adultery
. His disciples say to him: If that is the case between man and wife, it is not advisable to marry
. But he said to them: Not every one can accept what I have said, but only to those to whom it is granted
For there are some abstainers born that way from their mother's womb; and there are some abstainers who were made abstainers by men; and there are some abstainers who have made themselves abstainers for the sake of the Realm of Heaven. Let anyone accept this who can
. Then they brought children to him, for he to lay his hand upon them and say a prayer. And his disciples turned them away
. But Jesus said to them: Let the children to come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the Realm of Heaven belongs
. And he laid his hands upon them, and left from there
? And one came over nearby, and said to him: Good Teacher, what good deed must I do, for which eternal life may be mine
. And he said to him: Why do you call me good ? There is none good, only God alone. But if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments
He said to him, Which ? And Jesus said to him: You must not kill; and you must not commit adultery; and you must not steal; and you must not bring false witness
. and do your duty to your father and your mother; and you must love your neighbor as yourself
? The young man said to him: All these have I kept from my childhood. What more do I need to do
Jesus said to him: If you wish to be perfect, go and sell what you own, and give the money to the poor; and you will have a treasure in Heaven; and then, come follow me
. And the young man heard these words and he left sad; for he had great wealth
. And Jesus said to his disciples: Truly I say to you, it is difficult for a wealthy man to enter into the Realm of Heaven
Yes, I say to you: It is easier for a rope [of camel hair] to pass thru the eye of a needle, than for a wealthy man to enter the Realm of God
! And when the disciples heard this, they were astonished, and said: Who then can attain to Life
. Jesus looked on them, and said to them: For men this is impossible, but with God every thing is possible
? Then answered Kephas, and said to him: we have left behind every thing to follow you: What are we to have
Jesus said to them: Truly I say to you, that for you who have followed me, when all is made new, the Son of Man will be seated on the throne of his glory, you also will be seated on twelve thrones, and will judge the twelve tribes of Israel
And everyone who has left houses, or brothers or sisters, or  father or  mother, or wife or children, or lands, for the sake of my name, will be repaid a hundred times over, and also inherit Eternal Life
. Many who are first will be last, and the last, first

Chapter 20

. For the Realm of Heaven is like a landowner, who went out at daybreak, to hire workers for his vineyard

. And he made an agreement with the workers for one denarius a day, and sent them to his vineyard

: And going out at the third hour, he saw others standing idle in the market place

; and said to them, You go to my vineyard, too and I will give you what is fair wage

. and they went. And at the sixth hour and again at ninth hour he went out, and did the same

And then about the eleventh hour, he went out and found others who were standing round, and he said to them: Why have you been standing here idle all day

They answered him, Because no one has hired us. He said to them: You go to the vineyard, too, and I will give you what is fair wage
In the evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman: Call the workers, and pay them their wages; and starting with the last to come, and ending with the first
. And those of the eleventh hour came forward, and received one denarius each
. And when the first came, they expected to get more; but they also received a denarius each
, And when they took it, they grumbled at the landowner
. and said: These who came last have worked just one hour, and you have treated them the same as us who have done a heavy day's work during the heat of it
? But he answered one of them and said: My friend, I am not being unfair: was it not for one denarius that we did agreed on
. Take your earnings and go: for I choose to pay the last to come as much as you
? Have I no right to do what I want with what belongs to me; or are you envious because I am generous
. Thus the last will be first, and the first, last: for many are called, but few are chosen
: And Jesus was going up to Jerusalem: and on the way, he took his twelve disciples aside, and said to them
. Now we are going to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be handed over to the high priests and to the scribes, and they will condemn him to death
. And they will hand him over to the pagans to be mocked, and scourged, and crucified, and the third day, he will rise again
. Then the mother of Zebedee's children came to him with her sons; and she bowed to him, and made a request of him
And he said to her, What is it you want ? She said to him: Promise that these two sons of mine may sit one at your right hand and the other at your left, in your Realm
Jesus answered: You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink of the cup which I am to drink ? or be baptized with the baptism, that I am baptized with ? They say to him: We can
He said to them: You shall drink of my cup, and will be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but as for seats at my right hand and my left, these are not mine to grant, those are for whom they have been allotted by my Father
. And when the other ten heard this, they were indignant with the two brothers
. And Jesus called them to him and said: You know that the rulers of the pagans lord it over them, and their great men make their authority felt
: Not so should it be among you. But whoever among you wants to be great, let him be to you as a servant
: and whoever among you wants to be first, let him be your servant
. just as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve; and to give his life a ransom for many
. And as Jesus left Jericho, a large crowd followed him
Now there were two blind men were sitting by the way side. When they heard that it was Jesus who was passing by, they shouted out: Have pity on us, Lord, Son of David
. And the crowds scolded them and told them to be quiet. But they only shouted more, and said: Lord, have pity on us, Son of David
? And Jesus stopped, and called to them, and said: What do you want me to do for you
. They said to him: Lord, let us have our sight back
. And he felt pity for them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their sight returned, and they followed him

Chapter 21

; And as he neared Jerusalem, and had come into Bethphage, alongside of the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples

and said to them: Go to the village in front of you, and you will immediately find a tied up donkey, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me

. And if anyone says anything to you, tell them, The Master needs them and will send them back directly

: Now this whole event took place to fulfill the prophecy

Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold, your king comes to you, humble, and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden

. And the disciples went out, and did as Jesus had told them

. And they brought the donkey and the colt, then they laid their cloaks on the colt, and Jesus sat upon them

. And a great crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees, and put them on the path

And the crowds that went ahead of him, and those who followed after him, were all shouting: Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest heavens

, And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil; Who is this?, they said
. And the crowds replied, This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee
And Jesus went into the temple and drove out all those who were buying and selling there, and overturned the tables of the money changers, and the chairs of those that sold pigeons
. And he said to them: It is written, my house will be called the house of prayer; but you have turned it into a den of thieves
. And there were also blind and lame ones who came to him in the temple; and he healed them
And when the high priests and Pharisees saw the wonderful things he did, and the children shouting, Hosanna to the Son of David in the temple, they were indignant
And they said to him: Do you hear what they are saying ? Yes. Jesus said to them: Have you never read, By the mouth of children and babes you have made sure of praise
. And with that he left them, and went out of the city to Bethany, and stayed the night there
. And in the morning as he returned to the city, he felt hungry
And seeing a fig-tree by the road, and went up to it and found nothing on it but leaves alone. And he said to it: May you never bear fruit again. And at that instant the fig-tree withered
! And the disciples were amazed at what they saw, and said: How instantly did the fig-tree wither
Jesus answered them: Truly I say to you, if you have faith, and do not doubt at all, not only may you do this to the fig-tree, but even if you will say to this mountain, Get up, and cast yourself into the sea, it will be done
. And if you have faith, whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive
And when Jesus had gone to the temple, the high priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said to him: What authority do you have to do these things? And who gave you this authority
And I, too, Jesus replied to them, will ask you one question, and if you will tell me the answer, I will then tell you by what authority I do these things
The baptism of John, from where was it ? From Heaven, or from men ? And they argued it out thus among themselves, and said: If we should say, From Heaven; he will say to us, Why did you refuse to believe him
. And if we should say, From man; we the crowd to fear, for they all hold that John was a prophet
. And so they answered him: We do not know. Jesus said to them: Nor will I tell you by what authority I do these things
. And what is your take on this ? A man had two sons; and he went to the first and said to him, My Son, go and work today in the vineyard
. And he answered, I will no go. But afterwards he reconsidered and went
. And he went to the other, and said the same thing to him. And he answered: I will go, sir, but did not go
Which of the two did the will of his father ? They say to him, The first. Jesus said to them: Truly I say to you, that tax collectors and harlots so go into the Realm of God before you
For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe in him; but the tax collectors and harlots believed in him: and you, even after you had seen him, did not then reconsider and believe in him
Listen to another parable. There was a man, a landowner, who planted a vineyard, and fenced it with a hedge, and dug a wine-press in it, and built a tower in it, and leased it to tenants, and moved far away
. And when vintage time arrived, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his produce
. And the tenants seized hold of one of his servants, and beat him, and stoned another, and they killed one
. And again he sent other servants, in greater numbers than the first time; and they did the same to them
. And at last he sent to them his son: for he said, They will respect my son
. But the tenants, when they saw the son, said among themselves: This is the heir: Come on; let us kill him, and take over his inheritance
. And they seized hold of him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him
? When the owner of the vineyard comes; what will he do to those tenants
. They say to him: He will brutally crush them; and then lease the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him the produce at vintage time
Jesus said to them: Have you never read in the scripture, The stone which the builders rejected, has become the keystone: this was the Lord's doing; and isn't it wonderful to see
. Therefore I say to you, That the Realm of God will be taken from you, and will be given to a people that will yield it's fruits
44
. And whoever falls upon this stone, will be smashed; and on whomsoever it will fall, it will crush him
. And when the high priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they realized he was speaking about them
. And they would have liked to arrest him, but were afraid of the crowd who looked on him as a prophet
