Chapter 6

. After this, Jesus went off to the other side of the sea of Galilee - or of Tiberias

. And large crowds followed him, impressed by the miracles he performed upon the sick

. And Jesus climbed the hillside, and he sat down there with his disciples

. And the feast of the Jewish Passover was approaching

? And Jesus looked up, and saw a vast crowd coming towards him; and he said to Philip: where can we buy bread for them to eat

. And he said this to test him; for he knew what he was going to do

. Philip said to him: Two hundred denarii in bread would only be enough to give them each a small piece

: One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Kephas, said to him

? There is a boy here, who has with him five loaves of barley, and two fish, but what is that for all these people
. Jesus said to them: Make all the people sit down. Now there was plenty of grass there, and the people who sat down numbered five thousand
. And Jesus took the bread, and blessed it, and gave it out to those sitting. And so too, with the fish, as much as they wanted
. And when they had enough, he said to his disciples: Gather up the pieces which are left over, so that nothing gets wasted
And they picked them up and filled twelve baskets with pieces of what was left over from those that had eaten the five loaves barley
. And those people seeing the sign which Jesus had performed, said: Surely this is that prophet who was to come into the world
. And Jesus, who knew they were about to come and carry him off and make him king, escaped alone into the hills
, And when it was evening, his disciples went down to the sea
. and got in a boat to cross to Capernaum. And it was now getting dark, and Jesus had still not rejoined them
. And the sea now swelled against them from a strong wind that was blowing
And they had gone about three or four miles, when they sighted Jesus walking upon the sea, and as he approached the boat, they were frightened
. But Jesus told them: It is I; do not be afraid
. And they wanted to take him into the boat. And, suddenly, the boat came aground to where they were headed
And the next day, the crowd, who had remained on the other side of the sea, saw that there wasn't any other boat there, but the one which the disciples had set out on, and that Jesus had not left in it with his disciples
. Then some boats came out from Tiberias, near to the place where they had eaten the bread after Jesus had blessed it
And when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they too embarked in boats, and went to Capernaum, looking for Jesus
? And when they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him: Teacher, when did you come you here
Jesus answered them: Truly, truly, I say to you, You look for me not because you saw the signs, but because you ate the bread and were filled
Do not work for the food that is perishable, but for the food that remains unto Eternal Life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on him has God the Father set the seal
? They said to him: What must we do, in order to perform the works of God
. Jesus replied to them: This is the work of God, that you have faith in him whom he sent
? They say to him: What sign will you do, that we may see and put faith in you? What is the work you do
. Our fathers ate the manna, in the desert; as is so written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat
Jesus said to them: Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you bread from heaven; but my Father who gives you the real bread from heaven
. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven, and gives Life to the world
. They say to him: Our Lord, give us this bread always
. Jesus said to them: I am the bread of Life: he that comes to me will not hunger; and he who believes in me will not ever thirst
. But as I told you, Though you have seen me, you still do not believe
. All that my Father gives me will come to me: and he who comes to me, I will not turn away
. For I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of Him that sent me
And this is the will of Him that sent me, that I should lose nothing of what He has given me, rather, that I should raise it up on the last day
For this is the will of my Father, that every one who sees the Son, and believes in him, should have Eternal Life; and I will raise him up at the last day
. Then the Jews murmured at him, because he said: I am the bread that came down from heaven
? And they said: Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? And how can he say: I came down from heaven
. Jesus told them: Stop murmuring to one another
. No man can come to me, unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day
For it is written in the prophets: And they will all be taught by God. Whoever has heard from the Father, and learned from Him, comes to me
. Not that any one has seen the Father - only him who has come from God; it is he whom has seen the Father
. Truly, truly, I say to you: For him who believes in me there is Eternal Life
. I am the bread of Life
. Your fathers ate the manna in the desert, and they died
. But this is the bread which comes from heaven, for a man to eat of, and not die
I am the bread of Life, who has come down from heaven: and if a man eats this bread, he will live for ever. And the bread which I shall give, is my body, which I give for the Life of the world
? Then the Jews quarreled with one another, and said: How can he give us his body to eat
And Jesus said to them: Truly, truly, I say to you, That, unless you eat the body of the Son of Man, and drink his blood, you have no Life in you
. But he that eats of my body, and drinks of my blood, to him is Eternal Life; and I will raise him up at the last day
. For my body is real food, and my blood is real drink
. He that feeds on my body, and drinks my blood, remains in me, and I in him
. As the Living Father has sent me, and I live because of the Father; so he that shall feed on me, he also will live because of me
. This is the bread that came down from heaven: unlike your fathers who ate the manna, and died; whoever shall feed on this bead, will live forever
. These things he spoke in the congregation, while teaching at  Capernaum
. And many of his disciples who heard him, said: This is difficult language for those listening to it
? And Jesus was aware that his disciples were so murmuring at this; and he said to them, does this upset you
! What then, if you were to see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before
. It is the Spirit that gives life; the body has nothing to offer. The words which I have spoken to you, they are Spirit, and they are Life
But there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the outset, those who did not believe, and who it was that would betray him
. And he said to them: For this reason, I said to you, That no one comes to me, unless it is granted him by my Father
On account of this language, many of his disciples retreated, and no longer walked with him
? And Jesus said to the twelve: Do you also want to leave
. Simon Kephas replied, and said: Lord, to whom shall we go ? The words of Eternal Life are here with you
. And we believe, and know, that you are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God
. Jesus said to them: Did I not choose you twelve ? Yet one of you is a devil
. This he spoke of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon; for he was later to betray him, although one of the twelve

Chapter 7

. After this Jesus stayed in Galilee, for he could not stay in Judaea, because the Jews were out to kill him

. And as the Jewish feast of Tabernacles drew near

. And the brothers of Jesus said to him: Why not leave here and go to Judaea, so your disciples may see the works you do

For no one does something secretly if he wants it to become known by all. Since you do all this, you should let all the world see

. For even his brothers did not have faith in Jesus

. Jesus said to them: My time has not yet come: but your time is always present

. The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me; because I give evidence that its ways are wicked

. Go up to the feast; I am not going to the feast yet, because my time is not yet ready

. This said, he stayed behind in Galilee
. But when his brothers had left for the feast, then he went up as well, not in open, but quite privately
? And the Jews were looking out for him at the feast; and they said, Where is he
And there was much whispering among the people about him; for some said, He is a good man; while others said, No, he is leading the people astray
. Yet no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Jews
. And when the feast was half over, Jesus went to the temple, and began to teach
? And the Jews were astonished, and said: How does this man read scripture, without being taught it
. Jesus answered and said: My teaching is not from myself, but from the one who sent me
. He that is prepared to do his will, he will know whether my teaching is from God, or whether I speak it from my own will
He who speaks what his own mind wills, is looking to glorify himself: but he who is looking to glorify the one who sent him, is sincere, and has no evil in his heart
. Did not Moses give you the Law ? Yet not one of you keeps the Law
? Why are you looking to kill me? The crowd answered and said: You are mad: who is looking to kill you
. Jesus answered them: I did one work, and all of you are surprised by it
. Because Moses gave you circumcision - not that it was from Moses, but from the patriarchs before him - you circumcise a child on the Sabbath
? And if a child can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses is not broken, do are you angry at me, for making a man whole and complete on the Sabbath
. Do not judge by appearances; let your judgment be by what is right
? And some from Jerusalem said: Isn't this the one they want to kill
? And here he is, speaking out in the open, and they have nothing to say to him. Perhaps our Elders have decided he really is the Messiah
. Yet we know where this man is from -  when the Messiah comes, no one is to know where he is from
And Jesus, while teaching in the temple, raised his voice and said: You know both me, and know where I am from. And did I not come on my own accord; but He that has the right sent me, and Him you do not know
. I know Him, because it is from Him I come, and He sent me
. And they wanted to arrest him; but no one laid hold of him, because his time had not yet come
? And many in the crowd came to believe in him, and said: When the Messiah comes, can he perform greater signs than these that this man is doing
And the Pharisees overheard this discussion the crowd had about him: and they and the chief priests sent guards to arrest him
. And Jesus said: Only a little while longer am I to be with you, and then I am to go to Him who sent me
. And you will look for me, and will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come
The Jews said among themselves: where is he about to go, that we will not be able to find him? Will he go abroad to the Greeks, and teach the dispersed there
? What does does he mean when he says: You will look for me, and will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come
And on the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood there and shouted: If any man thirsts, let him come to me and drink
. whoever believes in me, as scripture says, From his breast shall flow fountains of living waters
He was speaking of the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive: for the Spirit had not yet been given, for Jesus had not yet been glorified
. And many of the crowd who heard his speaking, said: Surely, he is a prophet
? And some said: He is the Messiah. But others said: Would a Messiah come from Galilee
? does not the scriptures say, that the Messiah must be descended from David, and come from Bethlehem, the town of David
. And there was disagreement among the crowd about him
. And there were some of them who wanted to arrest him. But no one actually laid hold on him
? And the guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them: Why haven't you brought him in
. The guards replied them: There has never been anyone who has spoken as this man speaks
? The Pharisees said to them: Have you also been led astray
? Have any of the Elders, or any of the Pharisees, believed in him
. But these people, who know nothing of the Law, are damned
: One of them, Nicodemus, who had come to Jesus earlier, said to them
? Does our Law pass judgment on any man without it first hearing him, and finding out what he has done
. They answered, and said to him: Are you from Galilee, too ? Look into it for yourself: prophets do not come from Galilee
. So they all went off home

Chapter 8

. And Jesus went off to the Mount of Olives

. And in the morning he came again to the temple; and all the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them

, And the Scribes and Pharisees led a woman forward who was caught committing adultery. And when they had placed her in their midst

. they say to him: Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of adultery

? And the law of Moses orders us to stone people like this. What have you to say

. And they said this to test him, looking for something to accuse him by. But Jesus bent down, was writing on the ground

And as they continued asking him, he stood up, and said to them: Whoever among you without sin, let him be first to throw a stone at her

. And, bending down again, he wrote on the ground

. And when they heard it, left one by one, starting with the eldest; and the woman was left alone where she had stood in their midst
? And when Jesus stood up, he said to the woman: Where are they? does no one condemn you
. And she said: No one, sir. And Jesus said: Neither do I condemn you. You may go, and from here on sin no more
And Jesus spoke with them again, and said: I am the light of the world: he that comes to me, will not walk in darkness; but will find for himself the Light of Life
. The Pharisees said to him: You are your own witness, your testimony cannot be valid
Jesus answered them: Although I am my own witness, my testimony is valid, because I know from where I came, and where I go. But you do not know, from where I came, and where I go
. You judge by human standards: I judge no one
. Yet if I Judge, my judgment is valid, because I am not alone, but I and my Father who sent me
. And it is written in your Law, that the testimony of two persons is valid
. I am one of those who witness on my behalf, and my Father who sent me is also my witness
They say to him: Where is your Father? Jesus replied to them: You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would also know my Father
. These words Jesus spoke as he taught in the temple treasury: and no one hold of him, because his time was not yet come
. Again Jesus said to them: I am going away, and you will look for me, but you will die in your sins. And where I am going, you cannot come
? The Jews said: Is he about to kill himself when he says, where I am going you cannot come
. And he said to them: You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world
. That is why I said you will die in your sins; unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins
, The Jews said to him: Who are you ? Jesus said to them: What I have told you from the outset
I have yet many things to say and to judge about you. But He that sent me is true: and I only tell what I have heard from Him, and speak it in the world
. And they did not know that he was speaking to them about the Father
Jesus said to them again: When you lift up the Son of Man, then will you know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own, and so I preach what my Father taught me
. And the One who sent me, is with me; and my Father has not left me to myself, since I always do that which pleases Him
. And when he had spoken these things, many came to believe in him
. And Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him: If you make my word your home, you are indeed my disciples
. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free
? They say to him: We are descendants of Abraham, and never have we been slaves to anyone, what do you mean by saying, You will be free
. Jesus said to them: Truly, truly, I say to you, That whoever commits sin, is the slave of sin
. And no slave lives forever in the household; but the Son has a place there forever
. And that is why, if the Son frees you, you will really be free
. I know that you are the children of Abraham; but if you are looking to kill me, it is because you do not defer to my word
. I tell what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have seen with your father
They answered him: Our father is Abraham. Jesus told them: If you were children of Abraham, you would do the works of Abraham
But now you are looking to kill me, a man who has told you the truth, which I have heard from God: Abraham did nothing like that
But you are doing the works of your father. They say to him: We are not illegitimate offspring; we have but one Father, that is God
Jesus said to them: Were God your Father, you would love me; for I came forth from God: I did not come of my own will, it was He who sent me
. Do you know why you cannot take in what I say ? It is because you are unable to understand my language
Your father is the devil, and you prefer to do what your father wants. He was a murderer from the start, and never based in the truth; for the truth is not in him, and when he lies, it is his own tongue, for he is a liar, and the father of lies
. But as for me, I speak the truth, and so for that, you do not believe me
? Which of you find me guilty of sin ? And if I speak the truth, why do you not believe me
. A child of God listens to the words of God. Therefore if you do not listen, it is because you are not God's children
? The Jews answered, and said to him: Are we not right to say that you are a Samaritan, and possessed by a demon
. Jesus said to them: I am not possessed, no, I honor God, and you still condemn me
. Not that I care for my own glory, there is One who looks after that, and judge of it
. Truly, truly, I say to you: Whoever keeps my word, will never see death
The Jews said: Now we know that you are possessed. Abraham is dead, and so the prophets; yet you say: He that keeps my word, will never taste death
? Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead, or than the prophets, too ? What do you claim yourself to be
. Jesus said to them: If I seek glory for myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father that gives glory to me, by the One of whom you say, He is our God
And you do not know Him. But I know Him; and if I were to say, I do not know Him, I should be a liar, as you, but I do know Him, and I keep his word
. Your father Abraham rejoiced to think he would see my day; he saw it, and was glad of it
? The Jews say to him: You are not fifty yet, and you have seen Abraham
. Jesus said to them: Truly, truly I say to you, That before Abraham ever was, I AM
. And they picked up stones to stone him. But Jesus hid himself, and left the temple, and slipped by them, and went away

Chapter 9

. And as he went along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth

? And his disciples asked him: Teacher, who sinned, this man or his parents, for him to be born blind

. Jesus said to them: Neither he nor his parents sinned, he was born blind so the works of God may be displayed in him

. I must carry out the work of the One that sent me, while it is still day; the night soon approaches, when in no one can work.

. So long as I am in the world, I am the Light of the world

And having said this, he spit on the ground, and made a mud with the spit, and put it on the eyes of the blind man

. and said to him: Go, wash in the pool of Siloam. And he went, and washed, and came away with his sight

? And his neighbors and those whom earlier had seen him begging said: Isn't this the man who used to sit and beg

. Some said, It is him: and others said, No; he only looks like him. But he said: I am him
? And they said to him: How was your sight restored
He answered, and said to them: A man whose name is Jesus, made a mud and put it on my eyes, and said to me, Go, wash in the waters of Siloam. And I went, and washed, and my sight was restored
. They said to him: Where is he ? He said to them: I do not know
. And they brought him that had been blind to the Pharisees
. Now it had been on the Sabbath that Jesus had made the mud, and opened the man's eyes
And again the Pharisees asked him: How was your sight restored? And he said to them: He put a mud on my eyes, and I washed, and my sight was restored
And some of the Pharisees said: This man cannot be from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath. But others said: How can a man that is a sinner, perform these signs ? And there was a disagreement between them
They spoke again to the blind man: What do you have to say about him, now that he has opened your eyes ? He replied them: I say he is a prophet
And the Jews would not believe all this about him, that he had been so blind, and gained back his sight, until they had sent for his parents
? And they asked them: Is this your son, who you say was born blind ? And how is it that he now sees
; And his parents answered and said: We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind
. but how it is he sees now, or who opened his eyes, we do not know. He is old enough, ask him; let him speak for himself
His parents spoke like this, because they were afraid the Jews, who already decided if anyone should acknowledge him to be the Messiah, they would be turned out from the synagogue
. That is why his parents said, He is old enough, ask him
. And they sent again for the man who had been blind, and said to him: Give glory to God*, for we know that this man is a sinner.
. He answered them: I do not know if he is a sinner; I only know one thing, that I was blind, and now I can see
? They said to him again: What did he do to you ? How did he open your eyes
? He said to them: I have told you, and you do not listen. Why would you want to hear it again ? Do you want to become his disciples, too
. At this, they reprimanded him, saying to him: You can be his disciple, we are disciples of Moses
. And we know that God spoke to Moses; but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from
. The man replied to them: Now here is an amazing thing, that you know where he comes from, and yet he has opened my eyes
. Now we know that God does not listen to sinners; but to him that is devout, and does His will, so He listens
. Never has it ever been heard of, that anyone has ever opened the eyes of one born blind
. If this man were not from God, he could not do such a thing
. They replied to him: You are a born sinner, thru and thru; and you try so to teach us? And they drove him away
? And Jesus heard that they had driven him out; and when he found him, he said to him: Do you believe in the Son of God
? And he, that had been healed, answered: Sir, who is he, so I may believe in him
. Jesus said to him: You are looking at him, and he is speaking to you
. And he said: Lord, I believe: and he fell down, and worshipped him
And Jesus said: It is for judgment, have I come to this world; so that those without sight, may see; and that those with sight, may turn blind
? And hearing this, some of those Pharisees who were present, said to him: How is this? Are we blind, too
. Jesus said to them: If you were blind, you would be without sin; but since you say, We see; so your sin remains

Chapter 10

Truly, truly, I say to you, That he who does not enter into the fold of the flock by the gate, but gets in some other way, is a thief and a robber

. But he that enters through the gate, is the shepherd of the flock

. And to him the gate-keeper opens the gate; and the sheep hear his voice. And he calls the sheep by their names, and leads them out

. And when he has led out his flock, he goes ahead of them; and his sheep follow him, because they know his voice

. But the flock will not follow behind a stranger, but run away from him; because it knows not the voice of a stranger

. Jesus told this parable to them; but they did not understand what he meant by it when he told it to them

. And Jesus said to them again: truly, I say to you, That I am the gate of the flock

. All others who have come, were thieves and robbers: but the flock did not notice them

. I am the gate: and if any enter through me, he will be safe, and will freely come and go out, and will find pasture
. The thief comes not, but that he may steal, and kill, and destroy. I have come, that they may have Life, and may have that which is best
. I am a good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep
But a hired man, who is not the shepherd, and the sheep do not belong to him, and when he sees a wolf coming, leaves the flock, and runs away; and then the wolf attacks, and scatters the flock
. And a hired man runs away, because he is only a hired man, and has no concern for the flock
. I am a good shepherd; and I know my own, and my own know me
. As my Father knows me, so know I my Father; and I lay down my life for the flock
And I have other sheep, which are not of this fold: and those I must lead as well; and they will hear my voice; and there will be only one flock, and one shepherd
. For my Father loves me, because I lay down my life, in order to take it up again
No one takes it from me, I lay it down of my own free will, as it is in my power to lay it down, and so it is in my power to take it up again; and this command I have been given from my Father
. And these words again caused a disagreement among the Jews
? And many of them said: He is possessed, and is completely mad; why listen to him
? But others said: These are not the words of a possessed by a demon: could a demon open the eyes of one blind
. And the feast of the Dedication was then at Jerusalem, and it was winter
, And Jesus as walked in the temple, on the porch of Solomon
the Jews gathered around him; and said to him: how long will you keep our minds in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly
Jesus answered them: I have told you, and you do not believe. The works which I do in the name of my Father are my witness
. But you do not believe, because you are not my sheep, as I spoke so to you
. My sheep hear my voice: and I know them: and they follow me
. And I give to them Eternal Life: and they will never be lost: nor will anyone steal them from my hold
. For my Father, who gave them to me, is greater than all; nor can any steal from my Father's hold
30
. I and my Father are one
. And again the Jews took up stones, to stone him
? Jesus said to them: Of the many good works I have done you, from my Father, for which of those works do you stone me
. The Jews said to him: We do not stone you for doing good works, but for blasphemy, you are only a man, yet you claim to be God
? Jesus said to them: Is it not written in your Law, I said, You are gods
; If he called them gods, it was because the word of God was with them, and the scripture cannot be rejected
? do you say to him, whom the Father, has consecrated and sent into the world, You are blaspheming; because I said to you, I am the Son of God
. And if I am not doing the work of my Father, do not believe me
But if I am doing them, even if you do not believe me, at least believe the works; so you may know and believe, that my Father is in me, and I in my Father
; And again they wanted to arrest him; but he eluded them
. and he then went back to the far side of the Jordan, to where John had first been baptizing, and stayed there
. And many people who came to him there said, John did not even give one sign; but every thing John spoke about his man was true
. And many of them believed in him
