Chapter 1

. In the beginning was the Word *; and the Word was with God; and the Word was God

. He was with God in the beginning

. Everything was by his hands; and without him not one thing existed of all that existed

. In Him was Life; and the Life was the Light of men

. And this Light shines in the darkness; and that darkness could not overcome it

. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John

. He came as a witness, as a  witness to speak for the Light

. He was not the Light, only a witness to speak for the Light

. The true Light was that which enlightens every man who comes into the world
. He was in the world; the world that was by his hands; and the world did not know him
. He came to his own; and his own accepted him not
; But to those that accepted him, he gave the power that they might be children of God; to those that believe on his name
. who are born not of blood, not of the will of the body, not of the will of a man, but of God
And the Word became embodied, and lived among us: and we saw his glory, a glory as of the One-born of the Father, who is full of grace and truth
John gave witness about him, and shouted, and said: This is he, of whom I said would comes after me, and yet he is first; for he was before me
. And of his fullness have we all received grace, by grace
. For the law was given by Moses; but by Jesus the Messiah the truth and grace was given
. No man has ever seen God; the One-born of God, who is dear to his Father, he has revealed Him
? And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews of Jerusalem sent the priests and Levites to ask him, Who are you
. And he confessed, and did not deny, but declared: I am not the Messiah
And they asked him again: Who then ? Are you Elijah ? And he said: I am not. Are you a prophet ? And he said, No.
? And they said to him: Who are you? that we may answer those that sent us. What do you say about yourself
. He said: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make open the way of the Lord; as said the prophet Isaiah
. And those who were sent were of the Pharisees
? And they asked him, and said to him: Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor a prophet
. John answered, and said to them; I baptize with water; but one stands among you, whom you do not know
. He it is that will come after me, and was before me, whose sandal straps I am not worthy to loosen
. These things occurred in Bethany, at the crossing of the Jordan where John was baptizing
. The day after, John saw Jesus who was coming toward him, and said: Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world
. This is he of whom that I said, After me comes a man, who is yet first, for he was before me
. And I knew him not; but that he might be known to Israel, therefore, I have come baptizing with water
. And John testified, and said: I saw the Spirit descending from heaven, as if a dove, and it rested upon him
And I did not know him; but he who sent me to baptize with water, said to me - On whom you see the Spirit descend, and rest upon, he will baptize with the Holy Spirit
. And I saw; and I testified, that this is the Son of God
. And the next day, John and two of his disciples were standing
! And he looked at Jesus as he walked, and said: Behold, the Lamb of God
. And both his disciples heard him as he spoke, and they followed Jesus
? And Jesus turned, and saw them following him, and he said to them: What do you want ? They said to him: Teacher of us, where do you stay
. He said to them: Come, and see. And they came and saw where he was; and they stayed with him that day, and it was about the tenth hour
. And one of those who heard John and followed Jesus was Andrew, the brother of Simon
. He first saw Simon his brother, and said to him: I have found him, the Messiah
. And he took him to Jesus. And Jesus looked at him, and said you are Simon the son of Jona; you will be called Kephas
. The next day, Jesus wanted to leave for Galilee: and he found Philip and said to him, Follow me
. And Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Simon
And Philip found Nathaniel, and said to him: We have found him, of whom Moses wrote about in the law, and the prophets, Jesus the son of Joseph, who is of Nazareth
. Nathaniel said to him: Can there be any good thing from Nazareth ? Philip said to him: Come, and see
. And Jesus saw Nathaniel coming towards him, and said of him: Behold a true Israelite, in whom is no dishonesty
. Nathaniel said to him: From where do you know me? Jesus said to him: Before Philip called you when you were under the fig-tree, I saw you
. Nathaniel answered, and said to him: Teacher; you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel
. Jesus said to him: Because I said to you, that I saw you under the fig-tree, do you believe ? You will see greater things than these
He said to him: Truly, truly, I say to you, That hereafter you will see the heavens opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending to the Son of Man

. *The use of the term "the Word" is a symbolical usage

Chapter 2

And on the third day there was a wedding celebration in Cana, a town of Galilee: and the mother of Jesus was there

. And Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding celebration

. And the wine ran out: and his mother said to Jesus: They have no wine

. Jesus said to her: Why turn to me? My hour has not yet come

. His mother said to those waiting on table: Do whatever he tells you

. And there were there six stone water jars, set out for Jewish ceremonial washings, each one holding two to three measures

. Jesus said to them: Fill the jars with water. And they filled them to the brim

. He said to them: Draw some out now, and take it to the head feast guest. And they did this

And when the head feast guest tasted the water that had now become wine, and had no idea where it came from, only the waiters who had filled the pots with water knew, the head feast guest called the groom
. and said to him: People usually serve the best wine first, and keep the cheaper variety until the guests have had plenty; but you have kept the best wine till now
. This is the first of the signs given by Jesus which was performed at Cana in Galilee, and revealed his glory: and his disciples believed in him
. After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and his brothers and his disciples; and they stayed there only a few days
. And as the Jewish Passover drew near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem
. And in the temple he found those who sold oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money changers sitting there
And making himself a whip out of a cord, and drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep and the oxen and the money changers; and he spilled over their coins, and overturned their tables
. and he said to pigeon sellers, Take all this out of here; and do not turn my Father's house into a market
. And his disciples remembered, that it is written: The zeal for your house will consume me
? But the Jews responded, and said: What sign can you show to us to justify what you have done
. Jesus answered them: Do away with this sanctuary, and in three days I will construct it again
? The Jews said to him: It has taken forty-six years to build this sanctuary; are you going to construct it again in three days
. But he was speaking of the sanctuary that was his body
. And when he had rose from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this: and they believed the scriptures, and the words that Jesus had said
. And while Jesus was in Jerusalem for the Passover, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he gave
: But Jesus did not trust himself to them; because he knew them all
. And he never needed evidence about any man; for he himself could tell what a man had in him

Chapter 3

. And there was a man of the Pharisees there, whose name was Nicodemus, a leading Jew
And he came to Jesus by night, and said to him: Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who comes from God; for no one could perform these signs which you do, unless God were with him

. Jesus replied, and said to him: I say to you, Truly, Unless a man be born anew, he cannot see the Realm of God

? Nicodemus said to him: How can a grown man be born ? Can he go back into his mother's womb and be born anew

Jesus replied, and said to him, I say to you, Truly, Unless a man be born through water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Realm of God

. What is born of the flesh, is flesh; and what is born of the Spirit, is spirit

Be not surprised when I say to you, You must be born anew.

The wind blows where ever it pleases; and you hear it's sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from, or where it goes: so it is with all who are born of the Spirit

? Nicodemus answered, and said to him: How can that be possible
? Jesus answered, and said to him: Are you a teacher of Israel, and do not know these things
. I say to you, Truly, We speak only about what we know; and witness to what we have seen; but you reject our evidence
? If I speak to you of things of this world earth, and you do not believe me; how will you believe if I speak of heavenly things
. No one has gone up to heaven, except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of Man who is in heaven
: And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up
. that everyone who believes in him, may not be lost, but may have Eternal Life
For God so loved the world, that he gave his Son, the One-born [of him], that whosoever believes in him, may not be lost, but may have Eternal Life
For God sent not his Son into the world, to condemn the world; but so that through him the world might be saved.
. He that believes in him is not condemned; but he that does not believe, is already condemned; for he has not believed on the name of the Son, the One-born of God
And the judgment of condemnation is this, the light came into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, for their deeds were wicked
. For every one who practices evil, hates the light, and comes not to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed
. But he that acts in truth, comes into the light, to make clear that his deeds are done in God
. Later then, Jesus and his disciples came into the land of Judaea; and there he stayed with them there baptizing
. And John too was baptizing in Aenon, near Salim, where water was plentiful there: and the people came, and were baptized
. For John had not yet been thrown into prison
. And a discussion arose between one of John's disciples and a Jew about purification
. And they came to John, and said to him: Our teacher, who was with you across the Jordan, and of whom you testify, is baptizing now; and many flock to him
. John answered them: A man cannot take any thing by his own will, unless it is given him from heaven
. You are witnesses for me, that I said: I am not the Messiah, I am sent before him
. He that has the bride is the groom: the friend of the groom stands and listens to him, and is overjoyed to hear the groom's voice: that my joy, and it is complete
He must increase, while I decrease.
For the One who comes from above, is above all; and the One who is of the earth is earthly, and speaks on a earthly plane. The One who comes from above, is above all
. and testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony
. But the one that accepts his testimony, certifies that God is true
. For the One whom God has sent, speaks the words of God; he does not ration his gift of the Spirit
. The Father loves the Son, and has given every thing over into his hands
He that believes in the Son, has eternal life; but he who disobeys the Son, will not see life, but must endure the wrath of God

Chapter 4

. Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was making and baptizing more disciples than John

. Although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples

. And he left Judaea, and started back again for Galilee

. And he had to pass right through Samaria

. And he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph

And Jacob's well of water was there. And so Jesus, tired as he was from his journey, and sat down beside the well: and it was about noon

And a woman from Samaria came to draw water. And Jesus said to her: Give me water to drink.

. And his disciples had gone off to town to buy provisions
. The Samaritan woman said to him: You are a Jew, how can you ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria? For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans
Jesus replied to her: If you recognized the gift of God, and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him instead, and he would have given you living water
? The woman said to him: Sir, you do not have a bucket, and this well is deep, how have you flowing water
? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well, and drank from it himself, and his children, and his flocks
; Jesus replied and said to her: Whoever drinks this water, will thirst again
but whoever drinks of the water which I give him, will never be thirsty; no, the water which I give, will become a fountain of waters within him, abounding up to Eternal Life
. The woman said to him: Lord, give me of these waters, that I may not be thirsty again, and not have to come to draw from here
. Jesus said to her: Go, call your husband, and then come back here
; She said to him: I have no husband. Jesus said to her: You have said rightly, I have no husband
. for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have, is not your husband. What you said is true
. The woman said to him: Sir, I can see you are a prophet
Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain; but you people claim that Jerusalem is the place where it is proper to worship
. Jesus said to her: Woman, believe me, the hour is coming, when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem
. You people worship what you do not know; while we understand what we worship; for salvation is from the Jews
Yet an hour is coming, and is already here, when the authentic worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeks just such worshippers
. For God is Spirit; and those that worship him, must worship in spirit and in truth
. The woman said to him: I know that there is a Messiah coming; and when he comes, he will tell us every thing
. Jesus said to her: I, who talks to you, am he
? And while he was speaking, his disciples returned. And they wondered why he would speak with a woman; yet no one said, What do you want? or, Why do you talk with her
: And the woman left her water jar, and went to the town, and said to the people
Come, see a man that told me everything I ever did: is this not the Messiah ?
. And the people set out from town, and came to meet him
. Meanwhile, his disciples urged him, and said to him: Teacher, eat something
. But he told them: I have food to eat, of which you do not know
? The disciples said to one another: Has someone else brought him something to eat
. Jesus said to them: My food is to do the will of him that sent me, and to complete his work
Do you not have a saying, four months more and then the harvest? Listen to what I say, and open your eyes, and see the fields are bright, ready to harvest
. And he that reaps, collects his wages, and gathers a yield for Eternal Life; and the sower and the reaper may rejoice together
. For in this, the is proverb true, that one sows, and another reaps
. I sent you to reap what you had not worked for: others have done the labor, and you have come into their gain
. And many Samaritans from that town believed in him, on the strength of the woman's words who testified, He told me everything I ever did
. And when these Samaritans came to him, they begged him to stay with them; and he stayed there with them for two days
. And many believed on him, through his own spoken word
And they said to the woman: From now on we believe in him, not on account of your word; for we have heard him ourselves, and we know that he truly is the Messiah, the Savior of the world
. And after two days Jesus left from there and went into Galilee
. For Jesus himself had declared, that a prophet is not respected in his own region
And when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all the signs which he performed in Jerusalem during the celebration, which they too had attended
And Jesus went again to Cana in Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was at Capernaum a court official, whose son was ill
He heard that Jesus had come from Judaea to Galilee; and he went to him, and begged him to come down and heal his son; for he was near death
. Jesus said to him: Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe
The court official said to him: Sir, come down, before my child dies.
. Jesus said to him: Go, your son will live. And the man believed the word which Jesus spoke to him, and went away
. And as he was on his way down, his servants met him with the news and said to him: Your son is going to live
. And he asked them, at what time he had improved. And they said to him: Yesterday afternoon at one, the fever left him
And his father realized that it was at that time when Jesus had said to him, Your son will live. And he and his whole household believed
. This was the second sign that Jesus performed, on his return from Judaea to Galilee

Chapter 5

. Some time after this there was a Jewish festival, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem

. And there was a certain place of baptism in Jerusalem, which was called Bethesda in Hebrew; consisting of five porches

. And in them were laid a large crowd of the sick, and the blind, and the lame, and the paralyzed, waiting for the waters to stir

For an angel, from time to time, came down into the pool, and stirred the waters; and whoever went in first, after the motion of the waters, was cured of whatever ailment he had

. And one man there had been with illness for thirty eight years

? And Jesus saw him lying there, and knew he had been in this condition for a long time, and said to him: Do you want to be well again

And the sick man answered: Yes, Sir; but I have no one who will put me into the pool, when the water are stirred, and while I am on the way, someone else gets there before me

. Jesus said to him: Get up, pick up your sleeping mat, and walk

. And immediately the man was healed; and he got up, picked up his mat, and walked away; now it was the Sabbath day then
. And the Jews said to him who had been healed: It is the Sabbath; it is not allowed for you to carry your sleeping mat
. But he answered them: He who restored me, told me, Pick up your mat and walk
? And they asked him: Who is the man who told you, Pick up your mat and walk
. But the man had no idea who it was that had healed him; for Jesus had disappeared into the large crowd that filled the place
After awhile, Jesus met him in the temple, and said to him: Now you are healed; do not sin again, or something worse than before may happen to you
. And the man went back and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had cured him
. And for this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and wanted to kill him; because he did these things on the Sabbath
. But Jesus said to them: My Father goes on working, and so do I
And for this, the Jews were intent on killing him, because, not only had he broken the Sabbath, he had spoke of God as his Father, and so made himself God's equal
And Jesus answered them: Truly, truly, I say to you: The Son can do nothing of his own will, but only what he sees the Father do: for whatever the Father does, the Son does too
. For the Father loves his Son, and shows him every thing he does: and will he show him greater works than these, that will astonish you
. For as the Father raises the dead, and gives Life to them; so also the Son gives Life to whom he chooses
: For the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son
. that every man may honor the Son, as he honors the Father. He that does not honor the Son, does not honor the Father that sent him
Truly, truly, I tell you, That whoever listens to my words, and believes in the One who sent me, has Eternal Life, without being brought to judgment, he has passed from death to life
Truly, truly, I tell you, The hour will come, and even now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and to all who hear it, will live
: For as the Father is the source of Life, so thus too, he gives that the Son may be the source of Life
, and has moreover appointed him to carry out judgment because he is, as well, the Son of Man
; Do not be surprised at this; for the hour comes when all who are in their graves will hear his voice
. and will come forth; those that did good will rise again to life, and those that did evil, will rise to judgment
I can do nothing of my own will; but as I hear, so I judge. And my judgment is just; for I seek not my own will, but the will of him that sent me
. If I were to testify on my own behalf, my testimony would not be valid
. There is another witness who speaks on my behalf; and I know that his testimony on my behalf is true
. You sent to John; and he gave his testimony to the truth.
. Not that I depend on testimony from men: but I speak these things for your salvation
. He was a lamp alight and shining; and for a time you were content to glory in his light
But my testimony, is greater than John's; for the works my Father has given me to carry out, these works of mine testify that the Father has sent me
. And the Father who sent me, bears witness to me. You have never heard his voice, nor have you seen his aspect
. And his word find no home in you, because you do not believe in him whom he has sent
. You study the scriptures; for you think in them there is eternal life for you; and they testify to me
. And yet you refuse to come to me, that eternal life may be yours
. I do not get approval from men
. Besides, I know you well, you have no love of God in you
. I have come in the name of my Father, and you do not accept me: if another comes in his own name, you will accept him
? How can you believe, who look for approval from one another, and do not seek the approval which comes from God alone
. Do you imagine that I will accuse you before the Father ? There is one that will accuse you, the very Moses on whom you rely
. For, if you believed Moses, you would believe me, too; for it was I that Moses wrote about
? But if you refuse to believe his writings, how will you believe my words
