Syriac - Aramaic Peshittā Bible Text

Chapter 1

. Here begins of the gospel of Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God
. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: Behold, I send my messenger before you, to prepare your way
. A herald's voice in the desert: Make ready the way of the Lord; make straight his paths
. John baptized in the desert, and preached the baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins
. And he went out to all regions of Judaea, and the people of Jerusalem; and he baptized them in the river Jordan, while they confessed their sins
. And this John was clad in clothes of camels' hair; and wore a loin cloth about him; and his food was grasshoppers and wild honey
. And he preached, and said: Behold, after me comes one more powerful than I, of whom I am not worthy to stoop and untie the straps of his sandals
. I have baptized you in water; but he will baptize you in the Holy Spirit
. During that time, Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and was baptized in the Jordan by John
. And on his coming from the water, he saw the heavens torn apart, and the Spirit descending like a dove upon him
. And there was a voice from the heavens: You are my beloved Son, on you my favor rests
: And thereupon the Spirit sent him into the desert
and he was there in the desert forty days, being tested by Satan. And he was with the wild beasts; and angels administered to him
, After John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee,  and proclaimed the good news, of the Realm of God
and said: This is the time of fulfillment, and the Realm of God is close.  Reform yourself,  and believe the gospel
And as he walked along the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and  Andrew, his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen
. And Jesus said to them: Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men
. And immediately they left their nets, and followed him
. And as he passed further, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John, his brother, who also were in a boat, and mending their nets
. And he called them: and immediately they left Zebedee, their father, in the boat, with the hired laborers, and went after him
. And  when they entered Capernaum, he shortly thereafter taught on the Sabbath in their synagogues
. And they were astonished at his teaching; for he taught them as having authority, and not like the scribes
, And in their synagogue was a man, in whom was an unclean spirit; and he shrieked
and said: What have we to do with you ? Jesus, you Nazarene. Have you come to destroy us ? I know you, who you are, the Holy One of God
. And Jesus reprimanded him, and said: Shut your mouth, and come out of him
. And the unclean spirit threw him down, and shrieked with a loud voice, and came out of him
And they were all amazed, and asked one another, and said: What is this ? What new teaching is this ? For with authority he commands the unclean spirits, and they obey him
. And from then on his reputation spread out into all the land of Galilee
. And he leaving the synagogue, he entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John
. And Simon's mother-in-law was lying ill with a fever: and they told him about her
. And he came, and took her hand, and helped her up; and the fever then left her, and she attended to them
. And in the evening, after sunset, they brought to him all them that were diseased, and the possessed
. And all the town was gathered at the door
And he healed many who had various diseases, and expelled many unholy spirits; and he did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew him
. And in the morning, he arose before others, and withdrew to a lonely place, and there prayed
. And Simon and his companions searched for him
. And when they found him, they said to him: Every body is looking for you
And he said to them: Let us go into the nearby villages and towns; so I may preach, because that is what I have come to do
. And he preached in all their congregations, in all Galilee, and cast out unholy spirits
. And a leper came to him, and fell at his feet, and begged him, and said to him: If you will it, you can make me clean
. And Jesus had compassion on him, and stretched out his hand, and touched him, and said: I do will it; you are clean
. And in that moment, his leprosy left from him, and he became clean
, And he warned him, and sent him away
and he said to him: Do not tell anybody; but go, show yourself to the priests, and offer an offering on account of your purification, as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them
And as he went out, he began to proclaim publicly about the matter; so that Jesus could not openly go into any town, but stayed in deserted places; and they came to him from everywhere

Chapter 2

, And Jesus again entered into Capernaum, after a few days. And when they heard that he was at a house
. many gathered there, so that it could not hold them, even around the door. And he delivered sermons to them
. And they came to him and brought to him a paralytic, carried by four persons
And as they could not get near him on account of the crowd, they climbed onto the roof, and removed the roofing of the place where Jesus was, and lowered down the bedding on which the paralytic laid
. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic: My son, your sins are forgiven
: And there were some scribes and Pharisees there, who sat and thought in their hearts
? Who is this speaking blasphemy ? Who can forgive sins, except God alone
? And Jesus saw their faith, that they thought this to themselves; and he said to them: Why do you hold this in your heart
? Which is the easier, to say to a paralytic, Your sins are forgiven ? or to say, Get up, take up your bedding, and walk
, But so you may know that the Son of man has power on earth to forgive sins, he said to the paralytic
. I say to you, Get up, take your bedding, and go to your house
And he stood up at that instant, took up his bedding, and left in sight of them all: so that all were amazed, and praised God, saying: We never saw anything like this
. And he went again to the sea; and all the crowd came to him, and he taught them
And as he passed along he saw Levi the son of Alpheus sitting among the tax collectors. And he said to him: Follow me. And he got up and followed him
And it was so, that as he sat in his house, many tax collectors and sinners sat with Jesus and with his disciples, for there were many who followed him
And when the scribes and Pharisees saw that he ate with tax collectors and with sinners, they said to his disciples: Why does he eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners
When Jesus heard that, he said to them: The healthy have no need of a doctor, those beset with diseases do: I came, not to call the self-righteous, but sinners
And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees were accustomed to fast; and they came and said to him: Why are the disciples of John and of the Pharisees accustomed to fast, and your disciples do not fast
. Jesus said to them: Can the guests of the wedding fast so long as the bridegroom is still with them ? No
. But the days will come, when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and then they will fast on that day
No one takes a patch of new cloth and sews it upon an old garment, lest the shrinking of the new should pull from the old, and the tear become greater
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins, lest the wine rupture the wineskins, and the wineskins be ruined, and the wine spilled; so they put new wine into new wineskins
. And so it was, that as Jesus on a Sabbath walked in the fields, his disciples walked and pull off heads of grain
? And the Pharisees said to him: Look, how on the Sabbath, they do that which is not permitted
? Jesus said to them: Have you never read what David did, when he had need and was hungry, he and his companions
How he entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread off the Lord's table, which it was not permitted for any but priests to eat, and gave it to those also with him
. And he said to them: The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath
. Therefore also the Son of man is lord even of the Sabbath

Chapter 3

. And Jesus returned to a synagogue where there was a man, whose hand was withered
. And they watched him, that if he should heal on the Sabbath, so they may accuse him
. And he said to the man with the withered hand: Stand up here among us
. And he said: Is it unlawful to do good on the Sabbath, or to do evil ? to give life to a person, or to destroy ? But they remained silent
And he looked on them with anger, and grieved of their stubborn hearts. And he said to the man: Stretch forth your hand. And he stretched it forth, and his hand was restored
. And the Pharisees went out, that very moment, with the Herodians, and plotted against him, how they might destroy him
, And Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea. And many people joined him from Galilee, and from Judaea
and from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea, and from beyond Jordan, and from Tyre, and from Sidon: when they heard all that he did, great crowds came to him
. And he told his disciples to bring him a boat, on account of the crowd, to keep him from being crushed
. For he had healed many, so that they pushed toward him, in order to touch him
. And those who were afflicted with unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down and cried out, and said: You are the Son of God
. And he ordered all of them, not to reveal him
. And he went up a mountain, and summoned whom he decided on; and they came to him
, And he chose twelve to be with him, who he would send out to preach
. and who would have power to heal the sick, and to expel unholy spirits
. And to Simon he gave the name of Kephas
. And to James the son of Zebedee and to John the brother of James, he gave the name of B'neRakshi, that is, Sons of Thunder
, And also Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alpheus, and Thaddeus, and Simon the Zealot
: And Judas Iscariot, who was to betray him. And they came to the house
. and the crowd gathered again, so many that they could not eat bread
. And his family heard, and went out to take care of him; for they said: He is out of his mind
. And those scribes that had come down from Jerusalem, said: Beelzebub is in him; and by the prince of demons he expels demons
? And Jesus called them, and said to them, by parables : How can Satan expel Satan
. For if a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand
. And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand
. And if Satan rises up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is finished
.No one can enter the house of a strong man, and plunder his goods, unless he first ties up the strong man; then he may rob his house
: Truly I say to you: All sins, and the blasphemies that men may utter, may be forgiven them
. but whoever shall blaspheme against the Holy Spirit, will never be forgiven; he carries the guilt of his sin for eternity
. Because they had said: An unclean spirit is in him
. And his mother and his brothers came, and, standing outside, sent to call him to them
. And the crowds were sitting around him, and they said to him: Your mother and your brothers call for you outside
? He answered, and said to them: Who is my mother? and who are my brothers
! And he looked upon those who sat by him, and said: Behold my mother ! and, behold my brothers
. For whoever shall do the will of God, he is my brother, and my sister, and my mother

Chapter 4

On another occasion he began to teach by the lakeside. And great crowds were gathered about him; so that he boarded and sat in a boat on the water, and all the crowd stood on the shore
: And he taught them much by parables. And in his teaching, he said
. Hear you: Behold a farmer went out to sow
. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the side of the path; and a bird came, and ate it
. And some fell on rock, so that it had not any earth; and it soon sprouted, yet it had no depth of earth
. When the sun came up, it wilted; and because it had no root, it dried up
. And some fell among thorns. And the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded not
. And some fell on good ground, and came up, and grew, and yielded fruits; some thirty-, some sixty-, and some a hundredfold
. And he said: Whoever has ears to hear me, let him listen
. And when they were by themselves, those present with the twelve, asked him about this parable
: And Jesus said to them: To you it is given to know the mystery of the Realm of God; but to the others outside, all is in parables
that when they look, they may see and not see, and when they listen, they may hear and not understand; lest they repent, and their sins be forgiven them
? And he said to them: Do you not understand this parable ? And how will you understand all other parables
. The farmer that sowed, sowed the word
And those by the side of the path, are they in whom the word is sown; and as soon as they have heard it, Satan comes, and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts
. And those sown on the rock, are they who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy
And those who have no root to them, but are passing; and when there is affliction or persecution on account of the word, they are soon stumbled
, And those sown among thorns, are they that hear the word
and the cares of this world, and the desire for wealth, and the craving of other lusts enter in and choke the word, and it is without fruits
. And those sown on good ground are they that hear the word, and receive it, and bear fruits, by thirty-, and by sixty-, and by hundredfold
? And he said to them: Is a lamp put under a bushel, or under a bed ? Is it not placed on a light-stand
. For there is nothing hid, which will not be revealed; and nothing concealed, which will not be brought into the open
. If any one has ears to hear, let him listen
And he said to them: Take heed what you hear: with what measure you measure, it shall be measured to you: and there shall more be given to you who hear
For to him that has, will more be given; and from him that has not, even what he has will be taken from him.
, And he said: So is the Realm of God, as if a man should scatter seed onto the ground
. and should sleep and get up, by night and by day, and the seed should grow and sprout, he knows not how
. For the earth brings forth the crop; first the blade, and then the ear, and at last the ripe wheat in the ear
. And when the crop is ripe, soon comes the sickle, because the harvest has arrived
? And he said: To what shall we liken the Realm of God ? and with what parable shall we compare it
; It is like a grain of mustard seed which, when it is sown in the earth, is the smallest of all seeds sown on the earth
and when it is sown it springs up, and becomes greater than all herbs, and produces great branches, so that birds can lodge under its shadow
. And by many such parables, parables such as they might understand, Jesus preached to the people
. And outside of parables, he did not discuss it with them: but between himself and his disciples, he explained every thing
. And he said to them, that same day in the evening: Let us cross over to the other shore
. And they sent away the crowds: and they took him away in the boat he was in. And with them there were also other boats
. And there was a great storm and wind: and the waves beat upon the boat, and it was near being filled
? And Jesus was asleep on a pillow in the stern of the boat. And they came and woke him, and said: Lord, do you not care that we are going to drown
. And he got up, and reprimanded the wind, and said to the sea: Quiet!; be still. And the wind stopped, and everything grew calm
? And he said to them: Why were you so terrified, and why have you not faith
! And they were overcome with awe: and they said to one another: Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey him
