Chapter 1

, Since many have wanted to write accounts of those events with which we are acquainted
, as conveyed to us by those, who, from the outset, were eye-witnesses and attendants of the word
it seemed proper for me also, as I have reviewed them all carefully, to write out the whole, sequentially, for you, excellent Theophilus
. that you may know the truth of the accounts, with which you have been informed
In the days of Herod the king of Judaea, there was a priest, whose name was Zachariah, of the Abijah class of the priesthood, and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth
And they were both upright before God, and  followed all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord, beyond reproach
. But they were childless, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years
, And once, as he was exercising his priestly function before God
according to the custom of the priesthood, it fell to him to offer the incense And he went into the temple of the Lord
and the whole congregation of the people were praying outside, at the time of incense
And the angel of the Lord appeared to Zachariah, standing on the right side of the altar of incense
. And when Zachariah saw him, he was disturbed, and fear fell upon him
And the angel said to him, Fear not, Zachariah, for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John
. And you will have joy and delight, and many will rejoice at his birth
For he will be great before the Lord, and he will never drink wine nor strong drink, and will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother's womb
. And many of the children of Israel will he bring to the Lord their God
And he will go before him, in the spirit and power of Elijah the prophet, and will turn the heart of the fathers to their children, and those that are rebellious to the wisdom of the righteous, and will prepare for the Lord a well-disposed people
And Zachariah said to the angel: How shall I know this? For I am old, and my wife is advanced in years
The angel answered, and said to him, I am Gabriel, who stands before God, and I am sent to speak with you, and to tell you these things
Henceforth you will be silenced, and mute, until the day when these things take place, because you believe not my words, which will come true in their time
And the people were standing and waiting for Zachariah, and they wondered at his delay in the temple
And when Zachariah came out, he could not speak with them, and they realized that he had received a vision in the temple, and he made many gestures to them, and remained speechless
. And when the days of his service were accomplished, he returned to his house
, And it was after those days, that Elizabeth his wife conceived. And she kept to herself five months, and she said
These things has the Lord done for me, in the days when he looked upon me to take away my shame [of childlessness] among men
And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God into Galilee, to a town named Nazareth
to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary
And the angel entered the house, and said to her, Peace to thee, full of grace! The Lord is with thee, and blessed art thou among women
. And when she saw [him], she was disturbed by his words, and she pondered, what this greeting could mean
And the angel said to her, Fear not, Mary, for you have found favor with God
For behold, you will conceive in your womb, and will bear a son, and will call his name Jesus
He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David
And he will rule over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his reign there will be no end
? And Mary said to the angel, How can this be, as I have not known a man
The angel answered, The Holy Spirit will come, and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow, therefore he that is born of you is holy, and will be called the Son of God
Behold, your relative Elizabeth herself conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month with her who is called barren
. For nothing is impossible to God
Mary said, Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done what you have said to me. And the angel left her
, And Mary arose at that time, and went hastily to a town in the hill country of Judah
. and entered the house of Zachariah, and greeted Elizabeth
Now as soon as
Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the child leaped in her womb, and she was filled with the Holy Spirit
She gave a loud cry and said to Mary, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb
? And how did this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me
For behold, as the sound of your greeting fell upon my ears, with a great joy the child leaped in my womb
And happy is she that believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things that were told her by the Lord
, And Mary said, My soul extols the greatness of the Lord
. and my spirit exults in God my savior
For he has looked upon his lowly hand maid, and behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed
. And He that is Almighty has done for me great things, and Holy is his name
. And his mercy is upon those that respect him, for generations and eons
. He has overcome with his reach, and has scattered the intent of the proud of heart
. He has cast down the powerful from their thrones, and has exalted the humble
The hungry he has filled with good things, and the rich sent away empty
, He has aided Israel his servant, and mindful of his mercy
as he said, to our ancestors, to Abraham, and his line, for ever
. And Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months, and returned to her home
. And Elizabeth's time to give birth arrived, and she bore a son
And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had augmented his mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her
And it occurred on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child. And they called him by the name of his father, Zachariah
. And his mother answered, and said: Not so, but he shall be called John
. And they said to her: There is no one among your family called by that name
. And they made gestures to his father, how he would have him named
And he asked for a tablet, and wrote, His name is John. And every one was astonished
. And immediately his mouth and his tongue were freed, and he spoke, and praised God
And respect came upon all their neighbors, and these things were spoken of in all the high country of Judaea
And all who heard, pondered them in their heart, and said, What will this child be ? And the hand of the Lord was with him
And Zachariah his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and spoke this prophecy,
, Blessed be the Lord, God of Israel, who has visited his people, and wielded redemption for them
, And has raised up a horn of salvation for us, in the house of David his servant
, even as he proclaimed by the mouth of his holy prophets, who were of old
. that he would save us from our enemies, and from the hands of all who hate us
, And he has shown his mercy to our ancestors, and has remembered his holy covenants
, and the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, that he would grant to us
, to be delivered from the hands of our enemies, and that we should serve him, without fear
. all our days, in holiness and virtue
And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the face of the Lord, to prepare his way
, that he may give the knowledge of Life to his people, and forgiveness of their sins
, through the compassion of the mercy of our God, whereby the Light from above will visit us
to enlighten those that dwell in darkness, and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace
And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit. And he was in the desert, until the day of his appearance to Israel

Chapter 2

And it happened in those days, that a decree went forth from Augustus Caesar, that a census register all people of his dominion

And Joseph also went up from Nazareth of Galilee to Judaea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David

. with Mary, his betrothed, then with child, to be registered

And she brought forth her first born son, and swathed him in cloths, and laid him in the stall, for they had no place where they could lodge
And there were shepherds in that locality where they stayed, who kept watch of their flocks by night
And Behold, the angel of God came to them, and the glory of the Lord shone upon them, and they were very afraid
And the angel said to them, Fear not, for, behold, I proclaim to you great joy, which will be to all the world
For there is born to you this day a deliverer, who is the Lord Messiah, in the city of David
And let this be a sign to you - you will find the babe swathed in cloths, and placed in a stall
And instantly there were seen with the angel, the many hosts of heaven, praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest [heavens], and on earth, peace, and good hope to the sons of men

And Mary treasured all these things, and reflected upon them in her heart
And the shepherds returned glorifying and praising God for all that they had seen and heard, as it was told them
And when the eighth day arrived for the circumcision of the child, his name was called Jesus, as he was named by the angel, before he was conceived in the womb

And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother: Behold, this child is destined to be the downfall and for the rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed

And Hanna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher, she also was aged, and, from her maidenhood, had lived seven years with her husband,
and was a widow of about eighty four years, and constantly in the temple, and worshipped day and night with fasting and prayer
and she too stood up, in that time, and gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of him to every one that waited for the redemption of Jerusalem

And when the days were ended, they returned, but the child Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, unbeknownst to Joseph and his mother
for they assumed he was with his companions. And when they had traveled a day's distance, they sought him among their relatives and acquaintances

And not finding him, they returned again to Jerusalem, in search of him
And after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting amid the teachers, listening, and asking them questions

And when they saw him they were astonished And his mother said to him, My son, why have you done this to us ? Your father and I have been very worried and searching for you

in the high priesthood of Annas and of Caiaphas, the word of God was upon John the son of Zachariah, in the desert

As it is written in the book of the proverbs of the prophet Isaiah, who said, The voice of one crying in the desert, Make ready the way of the Lord, and clear him a straight path
All valleys shall be filled, and all mountains be lowered and the hill be leveled, and the rough place become smooth
. And all mankind shall see the Life which is of God
? And he said to the crowds who came to him to be baptized, You brood of vipers, who told you to flee from the wrath to come
Bring forth, therefore, fruits supporting your repentance And do not start to say to yourselves, We have Abraham for our father, for I say to you, that God can, from these stones, raise up sons to Abraham
And even now, the ax is put to the root of trees. Every tree not fruitful, is cut down, and thrown into the fire
? And the crowds asked him, and said, What, then, should we do
He answered and said to them, Whoever has two coats, let him give [one] to him that has none, and whoever has food, let him do the same

And soldiers likewise asked him, And what should we do? He told them, Be not accusative to anyone, and be not violent to anyone, and let your pay content you

John answered, Behold, I baptize you with water, but after me comes one greater than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen, he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire
He holds his winnowing basket in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, and the wheat he gathers into his granary, and the chaff he will burn in fire that does not go out
. And many other things also, he taught and preached to the people
But Herod the Tetrarch, because he was censured by John, on the subject of Herodias the wife of his brother Philip, and on account of all the crimes he had done
. and to this he added to his guilt, as he locked up John in prison
And it occurred, when all the people were baptized, that Jesus also was baptized. And as he prayed, the skies were opened

Chapter 4

, And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan And the Spirit led him into the desert
for forty days, to be tempted by the Deceiver And during that time, he ate nothing, and when he had at last ended them, he was hungry
. And the Deceiver said to him, If you are the Son of God, command these rocks to turn into bread
. Jesus replied, and said to him, It is written, Not by bread only, does man live, but by every word of God
. And Satan took him to a high mountain and showed him, instantly, all the kingdoms of the land
And the Deceiver said to him, To you will I give dominion of all this , and the glory of it, which is mine to give, to whom I please
. if therefore you will kneel before me, everything shall be yours
But Jesus replied, and said to him, It is written You shall alone worship the Lord your God, and him shall you serve
And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a parapet of the temple, and said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here
, for it is written, He will bid his angels to guard over you
and in their arms will they support you, less you ever stumble your foot on a stone
And Jesus replied and said to him, It is said, You shall not test the Lord thy God

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, he has anointed me to proclaim glad news to the poor, and has sent me to heal the repentant in heart, to set the downtrodden free, and new sight to the blind, and to excuse the repentant with forgiveness [of their sins],
. and to proclaim a year of favor from the Lord

And he rolled up the scroll, and gave it to the assistant, and went and sat down. And in the synagogue all eyes were upon him
. And he began to say to them, This day, this scripture which you have heard, is fulfilled
? And all present admired the gracious words which proceeded from his mouth, and they said, Is not this the son of Joseph
Jesus said to them, Perhaps, you will quote me this proverb, Physician, heal yourself, and whatever we have heard of your doing in Capernaum, do here also in your town
. And he said to them, Truly I say to you, No prophet is ever accepted in his native town
And I tell you truthfully, that there were many widows in the house of Israel, in the days of Elijah the prophet, when the heavens were closed up three years and six months, and there was a great famine in all the land
. but to none of them was Elijah sent, except to Sarepta of Sidon, a widow
And there were many lepers in the house of Israel, in the days of Elisha the prophet, but none of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian
. And when they heard these things, those in the synagogue were all filled with indignation
And they rose up, and expelled him out of the town, and lead him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built, that they might hurl him down from the rock ledge
. But he vanished amid them , and slipped away
. And he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught them on Sabbath days
. And they were impressed by his teaching, for his words had authority
, And there was in the synagogue a man, in whom was an unclean spirit, and he cried out, with a loud voice
and said, Leave me alone, What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Nazarene? Have you come to destroy us ? I know you, who you are, the Holy One of God
And Jesus said to him sharply, Shut your mouth, and come out of him And the unholy spirits threw him down in their midst, and came out of him, having not harmed him at all
And astonishment seized every one, and they talked together, and said, What a word is this! For, with authority and power, he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out
. And his renown spread into all the surrounding region
And when Jesus went out of the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon And the mother-in-law of Simon was afflicted with a severe fever, and they sought him out on her behalf
. And he stood over her, and addressed the fever, and it left her. And immediately she got up and waited on them
And at sunset, all those that had sick persons with various afflictions, brought them to him, and he laid hands on every one of them, and cured them
And unholy spirits went out of many, crying out and saying, You are the Messiah, the Son of God And he admonished them, and did not allow them to say that they knew him to be Messiah
And at dawn, he withdrew to a secluded place. And the crowd searched him out, and found him, and tried to keep him from withdrawing from them
. And Jesus said to them, I must announce God's sovereignty to other towns also, because that was why I sent
. And he preached on in the synagogues of Galilee

Chapter 5

, And it happened that a crowd gathered about him, to hear the word of God as he stood by the shore of the lake of Gennesaret
and he saw two boats moored by the lake, and the fishermen had left out of them, and were cleaning their nets
And one of them belonged to Simon Kephas, and Jesus got in and sat in it And he told them to cast off a little from the shore, into the lake, and he sat down, and taught the crowd from the boat
. And when he finished speaking, he said to Simon, Put out into the deep, and cast your net for a catch
Simon replied to him, Master, we have been hard at it all night, and have caught nothing, but, if you say so, I will cast the net
. And when they had done so, they caught many fish, so many that the net was near torn apart
And they signaled to their partners in the other boat, to come and help them. These came and filled both the boats, so that they were nearly sinking
And when Simon Kephas saw it, he fell at the feet of Jesus, and said, I beg you, my Lord, that you leave me, for I am a sinful man
, For amazement had overcome him, and all that were with him, at the catch of fish which they had made
and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Simon But Jesus said, Do not be afraid, from now on you will be netting men, unto Life
. And they brought the boats to land, and left everything, and followed him
And when Jesus was in one of the towns, a man full of leprosy came, and seeing Jesus, bowed down to the ground, and said to him, My Lord, if you will so, you can cleanse me
. And Jesus stretched out his hand to touch him, and said, I do will it, be cured And immediately, the leprosy left him
And he instructed him, Tell no one, but go and show yourself to the priests, and give offerings for your healing, as Moses has prescribed, for proof to them
. And his renown spread still more, and many people gathered to hear him, and to be cured of their afflictions
. And he would withdraw into deserted places, and pray
And one day when Jesus was teaching, that Pharisees and teachers of the Law were sitting by, who had come from all the villages of Galilee and of Judaea, and Jerusalem, and the power of the Lord was present to heal them
. And some men brought a paralytic, on a pallet, and tried to bring him in and place him before Jesus
And when they could not get him thru the crowd of people, they went up to the roof, and from the tiles, lowered him down with the pallet, into the middle of the crowd, and in front of Jesus
. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, Friend, your sins are forgiven you
? And the scribes and Pharisees began think this over, saying, Who is this that speaks blasphemy ? Who can forgive sins, but God alone
? And Jesus knew their reasoning, and answered them, What are these thoughts in your heart
? Which is the easier to say, Your sins are forgiven you, or to say, Get up and walk
So you may know, that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins, he addressed the paralytic, Get up, I say to you, take your pallet, and return home
. At once, he stood up before their eyes, and took up his pallet, and went home, glorifying God
. At this, astonishment overcame every one, and they Praised God, and full of awe, they said, Today we have seen miracles
. And afterward, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector, named Levi, sitting at the custom station, and said to him, Follow me
. And he left every thing, and got up, and followed him
And Levi prepared a great reception for him at his house, and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others who joined with them to dine
? And the scribes and Pharisees murmured, and said to his disciples, Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners
. And Jesus answered and said to them, The healthy have no need of a doctor, but sick do
. I came not to call the righteous to a change in heart, but, the sinners
? And they said to him, Why do the followers of John fast often, and pray, and also those of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink
. And he said to them, You cannot make the attendants of the bridegroom fast, while the groom is still with them
. But the days will come, when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then, they will they fast
And he told them a parable; No one tears a patch from a new coat, and puts it on old coat, if he does, not only will he have torn the new one, but the patch taken from the new coat will not match the old one
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins, otherwise, the new wine will burst the wineskins, and the wine will run out, and the wineskins ruined
. So they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved
. And no one drinks old wine, and then calls for new, for he says, The old has flavor
